\n A longtime Georgia sheriff is taking heat for sharing a Facebook post suggesting that America return to the \u201ctradition of hanging traitors\u201d \u2014 but insists his commentary shouldn\u2019t be taken literally.<\/p>\n

Grady County Sheriff Harry Young posted a meme on his personal Facebook page on May 8 depicting a painting of prisoners as they were set to be executed, eliciting both critical and supportive comments on the sheriff\u2019s profile.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we get back to the tradition of hanging traitors?\u201d the post read.<\/p>\n

The meme caught the attention of Laura Register, a Democratic activist and former county board of education member, who said she was \u201ccompletely disgusted\u201d by it and other content on the sheriff\u2019s page.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just one example,\u201d Register wrote while sharing the post on her own Facebook profile Sunday. \u201cIf you think people that don\u2019t look like him will get a fair chance you need to think again. Silence is complicity and I won\u2019t be silent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hours later, Young shared the post a second time with additional commentary connecting the meme to ongoing protests and looting in the aftermath of George Floyd\u2019s police-involved death in Minneapolis on May 25.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you like destroying hard working people\u2019s property because of one officer\u2019s horrible decision then you are the problem!!!\u201d Young wrote.<\/p>\n

The response to Young\u2019s latest post was mixed \u2014 some people praised him as the \u201cgreatest sheriff\u201d in Georgia, while others said he was unfit to keep his job.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope y\u2019all are reporting this to your county officials,\u201d one response read. \u201cA person speaking like this should not be an elected official.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young, who is running for re-election in a June 9 primary, did not return a message seeking comment Wednesday. But he said his initial post was in reference to the \u201ctraitors of America in the political field,\u201d such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re almost like spies,\u201d Young told the Thomasville Times-Enterprise. \u201cThey need to be dealt with, and they used to be, but now it seems like it\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young is serving his fourth term as sheriff, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.<\/p>\n

Young also included liberal billionaire George Soros when asked whom he was referring to with the \u201changing traitors\u201d post, according to the news<\/a>paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they should be dealt with,\u201d Young said, insisting he did not mean for anyone to be executed. \u201cThey should be put in prison or something \u2026 I\u2019m talking about George Soros and people like him who are funding people going out and funding people who are protesting.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
