Altman also doesn\u2019t see ads as OpenAI\u2019s \u201cbiggest revenue opportunity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In an interview on Conversations with Tyler, Altman also took another direct shot at Google\u2019s ad model:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cAds on a Google search are dependent on Google doing badly. If it was giving you the best answer, there\u2019d be no reason ever to buy an ad above it.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSo you\u2019re like \u2013 that thing is not quite aligned with me. ChatGPT, maybe it gives you the best answer, maybe it doesn\u2019t, but you\u2019re paying it, or hopefully all are paying it, and it\u2019s at least trying to give you the best answer.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>His point.<\/strong> Google makes money when results fall short. ChatGPT should only make money when it earns users\u2019 trust, according to Altman. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIf ChatGPT were accepting payment to put a worse hotel above a better hotel, that\u2019s probably catastrophic for your relationship with ChatGPT.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care. <\/strong>If Altman\u2019s ChatGPT ad model vision becomes reality, the path from question to recommendation to purchase could all take place in a single conversation. Brands and businesses will need to figure out how to remain visible in these new search journeys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Altman would do ChatGPT Ads<\/strong>. Show the best recommendation first. Then, if a user books or buys with one click, OpenAI could take a small commission that doesn\u2019t affect results.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIf ChatGPT shows you its guess \u2013 the best hotel, whatever that is \u2013 and then if you book it with one click, takes the same cut that it would take from any other hotel, and there\u2019s nothing that influenced it \u2026 I think that\u2019s probably OK.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe\u2019ll do that for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> at some point.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What he won\u2019t do<\/strong>. ChatGPT won\u2019t have pay-to-play answers. If money corrupts rankings, trust collapses, according to Altman.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThere\u2019s a kind of ad that I think would be really bad like the one we talked about. There are kinds of ads that I think would be very good \u2013 or pretty good \u2013 to do. I expect it\u2019s something we\u2019ll try at some point. I do not think it is our biggest revenue opportunity.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What an OpenAI ad might look like<\/strong>. Not even Altman knows yet. He\u2019s not even working on it:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m really good about not doing the things I don\u2019t want to do.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou know, we have the world expert thinking about our product strategy. I used to do that. I used to spend a lot of time thinking about product and now she\u2019s much better at it than me. I have other things to think about.
