Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening.<\/strong> The European Commission, the EU\u2019s top antitrust enforcer, is expected to announce the probe as soon as Thursday.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The case falls under the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Markets Act<\/a> (DMA), a law that bars tech \u201cgatekeepers\u201d from unfairly favoring their own services or penalizing others.<\/li>\n<li>Companies that break the rules can be fined up to 10% of their global revenue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Site reputation abuse.<\/strong> Google\u2019s enforcement against publishers is based on a spam policy introduced in March 2024 and updated in November 2024. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The policy targets \u201csite reputation abuse\u201d \u2013 better known to SEOs as parasite SEO \u2013 which occurs when third parties post low-quality content on trusted sites to piggyback on their authority and manipulate Google rankings.<\/li>\n<li>Google said this kind of content can confuse or mislead users, and has taken manual action against sites hosting it. <\/li>\n<li>The company later updated the policy to state that even content created with first-party oversight can violate the rule if its main goal is to exploit a site\u2019s ranking signals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The report.<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/644edfe6-ccba-466a-bc93-e82f59e124df\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU readies fresh investigation into Google over news publisher rankings<\/a> (registration required)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
