\n The mental health hotline that\u2019s a cornerstone of the $1.25 billion mental health plan run by Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s wife saw a 17 percent surge in calls during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic \u2014 but still missed its annual target to actually connect people to services.<\/p>\n

In fact, the number of \u201csupportive connections\u201d to suicide prevention, counseling and other services at first lady Chirlane McCray\u2019s ThriveNYC declined by over 12,000 from 2019, when the city wasn\u2019t experiencing a public health crisis.<\/p>\n

NYC Well, a free and confidential hotline available around the clock, answered 17 percent more calls in May 2020 compared to the previous year. The hotline\u2019s website also saw a 400 percent spike in visits in April 2020 compared to April 2020.<\/p>\n

But the hotline made just 262,200 \u201csupportive connections\u201d for callers from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020, down from 274,400 the previous year and short of its 268,600 target.<\/p>\n

The data is buried in the annual Mayor\u2019s Management Report<\/a> that analyzes the performance of city agencies and holds government officials accountable.<\/p>\n

ThriveNYC was included for the first time this year.<\/p>\n

The report also reveals findings by an outside organization of international experts called the Science<\/a> Advisory Group that said the Big App<\/a>le could see major changes to mental health treatment for New Yorkers \u201cin the next five years\u201d or at least five years after the start of the $1.25 billion plan in 2016.<\/p>\n

The major milestones include \u201cmore New Yorkers with an identified mental health need receive treatment\u201d and \u201cfewer mental health emergencies, as measured by 911 dispatches and emergency department visits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics have called for an overhaul of ThriveNYC due to the costly program\u2019s lack of metrics, transparency and inability to help the seriously mentally ill.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
