\n\tThe One Battle After Another <\/em>boys thrilled London fans Wednesday night at an exclusive in conversation event at BFI Southbank.<\/p>\n

\n\tPaul Thomas Anderson and his star, Leonardo DiCaprio (a.k.a Bob Ferguson), were hosted by Scottish presenter Edith Bowman to talk about the wild reaction to their action thriller \u2014\u00a0the Warner Bros. feature has so far grossed over $200 million \u2014\u00a0and dive into how it was made. Among other topics, Anderson touched on how important it was finding Chase Infiniti in the search for Willa, and gushed about DiCaprio\u2019s acting choices.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe reaction has been incredible from people,\u201d began the Titanic <\/em>and Wolf of Wall Street<\/em> star. \u201cNot just from my friends and family, but people coming up to me and interacting with me about what the film meant to them. I don\u2019t know. It\u2019s been a really special moment making this film and seeing people\u2019s feelings about what it meant to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOne moment in particular that had the audience chuckling was when Anderson revealed that production was paused to wait for their sensei, Benicio del Toro. \u201cWe had to call a timeout because Benicio had to go off and do Wes Anderson\u2019s [The Phoenecian Scheme<\/em>],\u201d said the Boogie Nights <\/em>and Phantom Thread <\/em>director. \u201cSo we really had a decision to make there. Normally, in normal situations, you go, \u2018Oh, shit, we lost Benicio.\u2019 But we really said there\u2019s no possible way we can do this without him. We\u2019ll do something that we\u2019re going to have to figure out how to do financially and creatively.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe took a break shooting for two and a half months, and picked back up again. And luckily, we were able to make that work, because everybody on the crew said, \u2018Oh yeah, let\u2019s wait for Benicio,\u201d said Anderson. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine not waiting for Benicio.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe anecdote came up when the filmmaker was asked what had changed that meant he finally felt it was the right time to make this movie. \u201cChase, first of all,\u201d he also said. \u201cLeo aging into the part, honestly. Me aging into being able to tell the story properly, being a father and having children\u2026 [And] just confidence to tell the story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe men took turns gushing about the film\u2019s female leads, including Teyana Taylor, who Anderson described as \u201ca stick of dynamite\u201d but also \u201ca real softy.\u201d When they got onto antagonist Lockjaw, portrayed by Sean Penn, DiCaprio chimed in: \u201cHe really brought elements to it that a lot of other actors\u2026 wouldn\u2019t have made that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe talked a lot about who Lockjaw was going to be,\u201d said DiCaprio. \u201cAnd then when Paul decided on Sean, what was so amazing to see it up on film \u2014\u00a0because I hadn\u2019t seen a lot of it, I was off doing my own stuff \u2014\u00a0was the fragility that he brought to what would otherwise be an obvious choice [from] maybe some other actors to make him purely menacing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDiCaprio continued about Penn\u2019s interpretation of Lockjaw: \u201cI just thought he was so incredibly pathetic and almost sympathetic at times. Sitting there, looking at his desk [and he\u2019s] gone on this whole journey, and you have this generic IKEA desk, this window view of\u2014\u00a0is it Dallas? I don\u2019t know. Sitting there and looking in that moment going, \u2018I\u2019ve arrived,\u2019 as if he\u2019s in the Shangri-La\u2026 How pathetic he was.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnderson concurred: \u201cIt\u2019s a testament to Sean that from time to time, there would be weird subsets of the crew that would say: \u2018I hate to admit this, but I\u2019m Team Lockjaw!’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter discussing the brilliance of Jonny Greenwood\u2019s score, Anderson and DiCaprio were also asked by Bowman about the film\u2019s thrilling car chase on the iconic, hilly stretch of desert road. \u201cI remember seeing those roads, and I was awestruck,\u201d said DiCaprio. \u201cThey made it feels like you\u2019re on a roller coaster ride. I think Regina [King] put it best, she said, \u2018I\u2019ve never been more tense in a car chase scene with three cars chasing each other down a straight road,’\u201d he laughed. \u201cIt was money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnderson said, while a nightmare to film on, the road itself is a testament to \u201cgetting in the car and driving around looking for locations, rather than just looking at a book.\u201d He added: \u201cThat stuff\u2019s usually been shot before, and what you\u2019re crossing your fingers\u2019s will happ<\/a>en is something like coming across that river of hills. My imagination isn\u2019t good enough to come up with something like that,\u201d he said. \u201cI would [have] just put everybody on flat roads and think, \u2018Well, we\u2019re gonna have to have a car chase.\u2019 But you kind of hit the ceiling and it requires getting out into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOne Battle After Another <\/em>is already generating intense awards buzz, with Anderson and DiCaprio among the frontrunners on The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2018s Oscars predictions via the Feinberg Forecast here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
