\n Princeton University could be forced to pay back millions of dollars in federal funding \u2014 and also be fined \u2014 over its president\u2019s recent admission that racism persists at the Ivy League institution.<\/p>\n

In a letter to Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber, the US Department of Education said it was opening an investigation into a Sept. 2 letter in which he outlined the school\u2019s \u201cefforts to combat systemic racism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmong other things, you said \u2018[r]acism and the damage it does to people of color persist at Princeton\u2026\u2019 and \u2018[r]acist assumption\u2026remain embedded in structures of the University itself,\u201d Assistant Secretary Robert King of the Office of Postsecondary Education wrote.<\/p>\n

Princeton\u2019s \u201cadmitted racism\u201d raises questions about the accuracy of \u201cnondiscrimination and equal opportunity assurances\u201d it\u2019s made to the DOE in exchange for more than $75 million in taxpayer money since Eisgruber took over in 2013, King said.<\/p>\n

Officials are also \u201cconcerned Princeton\u2019s many nondiscrimination and equal opportunity claims to students, parents, and consumers in the market for education certificates may have been false, misleading, and actionable substantial misrepresentations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

King\u2019s Wednesday letter demands that Princeton produce a host of records and written answers to questions within three weeks, and also make Eisgruber and a \u201cdesignated corporate representative\u201d available for \u201ctranscribed interviews, under oath,\u201d within four weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cBased on the facts, [Education Secretary Betsy DeVos] may consider measures against Princeton for false Program Participation Agreement nondiscrimination assurances, including an action to recover funds,\u201d King wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, she may consider measures against Princeton for making substantial misrepresentations about the nature of its educational program, including a fine proceeding.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the letter, first reported Thursday by the Washington Examiner<\/a>, King noted that federal officials were \u201caware of the challenges posed by COVID-19 to institutions of higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the serious, even shocking nature of Princeton\u2019s admissions compel the Department to move with all app<\/a>ropriate speed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The probe will be conducted by the DOE\u2019s Office of the General<\/a> Counsel and the matter is also being referred to the US Department of Justice\u2019s Civil Rights Division and the DOE\u2019s Office for Civil Rights \u201cfor any additional action they deem appropriate,\u201d King said.<\/p>\n

Princeton spokesman Ben Chang said in a written statement that the university would respond to the DOE \u201cin due course.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is unfortunate that the Department appears to believe that grappling honestly with the nation\u2019s history and the current effects of systemic racism runs afoul of existing law,\u201d Chang wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe University disagrees and looks forward to furthering our educational mission by explaining why our statements and actions are consistent not only with the law, but also with the highest ideals and aspirations of this country.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
