\n BERLIN \u2014 The Austrian government has spoken up to correct US President Donald Trump\u2019s claim that people in its country live in \u201cforest cities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump recently cited Austria and other European countries as models of good forest management that US states like California, which has seen devastating wildfires lately, should learn from.<\/p>\n

Calling in to Fox News<\/a> on Tuesday, Trump said, \u201cYou look at countries, Austria, you look at so many countries. They live in the forest, they\u2019re considered forest cities. So many of them. And they don\u2019t have fires like this. And they have more explosive trees.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an article Thursday<\/a> for the London-based Independent, Austria\u2019s agriculture minister sought to set the record straight.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been both serious and humorous conversations on social media<\/a> about the \u2018exploding trees\u2019 (Trump) mentioned, as well as the fact that he claimed we live within \u2018forest cities\u2019 which never catch fire,\u201d Elisabeth Koestinger wrote. \u201cAs Austrians, fortunately blessed with a healthy sense of humor, we normally take such clich\u00e9s about our country in our stride.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the gravity of current events make Trump\u2019s words much more worrying \u2014 after all, right at this moment, thousands of people are fighting horrendous wildfires in life-or-death situations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn reality, Austria is a country situated in the heart of Europe, where people do not live in the forest, but rather with the forest and in a close, sustainable relationship with the natural environment,\u201d Koestinger wrote.<\/p>\n

Sustainable management of forests, which cover almost half the nation\u2019s territory, is important, she added, but not because they\u2019re more combustible.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo clarify: No, we don\u2019t have any exploding trees in Austria,\u201d Koestinger said, though she did confirm Trump\u2019s assertion that \u201cwe have found a way to give our trees the space they need.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis does not make us \u2018forest people,\u2019 but shows how important understanding our environment and our natural resources is,\u201d she said, adding that \u201ctaking climate change seriously and mitigating its effects is a huge part of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump caused mirth in Finland two years ago, when he claimed the Nordic nation spends \u201ca lot of time on raking<\/a> and cleaning and doing things\u201d to clear forest floors to prevent fires.\n <\/div>\n
