\n A Bronx man has been indicted on an attempted murder charge for allegedly using a nail-studded plank to beat his ex-girlfriend \u2014 who lost several teeth and her vision in one eye during the horrific attack, officials said.<\/p>\n

Grand jurors returned an indictment against James Fitzgerald, 53, for the brutal assault on his estranged girlfriend on a Jamaica, Queens, street in May, the Queens District Attorney\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n

In the early evening of May 16, Fitzgerald allegedly attacked the 35-year-old, who was prone on the ground in front of a fish market, as witnesses begged him to stop, officials said.<\/p>\n

At one point he walked away \u2014 but allegedly returned with the nail-spiked plank and slammed it into her face so many times that she lost consciousness and several of her teeth broke off and flew onto the sidewalk, authorities say.<\/p>\n

The woman, who is now permanently disfigured, suffered a crushed orbital bone and blindness in her right eye \u2014 despite three surgeries, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n

Fitzgerald is also charged in connection with a prior April 17 assault on the victim, in which he allegedly pummeled her in the head and face.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s being held without bail and faces up to 25 years in prison on a six-count indictment, including charges of attempted murder, assault and weapons possession.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
