Simon Cowell<\/strong> is looking back on one of the most painful moments of his life \u2014 Liam Payne<\/strong>\u2018s death.<\/p>\n

During an episode of The New York Times<\/em>\u2018 podcast The Interview<\/em> on Saturday, the record executive revealed how he learned about the One Direction<\/strong> alum\u2019s passing. He said:<\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody who works with me very closely came into my room. I was up in the north of England, and I could tell by the look of her face that she was upset. She said, \u2018Sit down,\u2019 and she told me. And it was like \u2014 wow.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Simon struggled to describe how he felt at the time, but he said it felt similar to when he learned his father died:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a bit like I felt when I heard the news<\/a> when my dad passed away. It\u2019s very difficult to put into words how you feel. It\u2019s just shock. At that point, you\u2019re not really thinking clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And all the former American Idol<\/em> judge wanted to do was call Liam\u2019s parents:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI just remember saying: \u2018I really need to speak to his mum and dad. Can you get them on the phone as soon as possible please?\u2019 Because, God, as a parent, what that must have felt like. I knew his mum and dad, and I wanted to reach out, just to say how I felt. It was just awful, awful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Mainly, it came as a major shock to him because he thought Liam was doing well. Simon went on to share that he met with the singer a year before his death and thought he looked \u201camazing.\u201d The X-Factor<\/em> alum recalled:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d seen him like a year before in this room. I remember seeing him walk into this room and saying: \u2018God, you look amazing, Liam. What have you done?\u2019 \u2018Well, I\u2019m going to the gym\u2019 and blah, blah, blah.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Simon said they then talked about Liam\u2019s son Bear<\/strong>, whom he shares with ex Cheryl Cole<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about his son and how much it means to be a dad. And I was talking to him about there\u2019s more to life than just music; you\u2019ve got to a point in your life where you\u2019ve got choice now, etc. We just hung out as friends. That\u2019s why I was so shocked and surprised when I heard the news.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
