FAMM have entered a legal dispute with HAVEN. (producers Harrison Walker and Jacob Donaghue), a U.K.-based dance pop artist project whose TikTok hit \u201cI Run\u201d has raised serious ethical and philosophical questions surrounding the politics of AI and music.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-276094\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<h5 class=\"headline\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_deal_with_%E2%80%9CI_Run%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\n        What&#8217;s the deal with &#8220;I Run&#8221;?<br \/>\n      <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            FAMM alleges that HAVEN. producer Walker used AI tools to alter his voice to sound like Smith\u2019s. Further, the label, which is independent and owned by Smith, shared that they believe that Smith\u2019s catalog was used to train an AI to write the song\u2019s lyrics and craft its topline melody. (Walker and Donaghue previously <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/haven-i-run-poised-hit-ai-deepfake-allegations-slowed\/\">confirmed<\/a> to <i>Billboard<\/i> that they used the AI tool Suno to \u201cgive their original vocal a female tone\u201d).\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The track was already gaining momentum on TikTok before it was released officially on October 10 with millions of plays on the platform. The song&#8217;s vocal resemblance to Smith\u2019s and the swirling questions surrounding its source prompted the British singer to make a since-deleted video where she clarified that the song is not her&#8217;s, writing \u201cit\u2019s not meeeee\u201d in the video&#8217;s comments.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Around November 14, \u201cI Run\u201d was taken down from TikTok and streaming platforms after recording industry bodies deemed the song a violation of copyright and impersonation policies (stymieing the song from debuting on U.K. and U.S. charts). HAVEN. used the hashtag #JorjaSmith to promote the song in TikTok videos. In multiple videos, Walker and Donaghue never deny whether it is Smith and instead seem to lean further into the public\u2019s speculation that it was her.  \u201cIt was more so just embracing that it does sound like her,\u201d a spokesperson for HAVEN. told <i>Billboard<\/i> in their defense.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            FAMM detailed their case on Instagram, where they stated that they wanted to have the conversation in public to encourage \u201cpublic discourse\u201d on these complex questions. They revealed that Walker and Donaghue&#8217;s team reached out to Smith following the track\u2019s virality, asking for a feature. It&#8217;s a glimpse into what our future will surely look like if AI continues on without restriction.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Algorithmic platforms like TikTok are fueled by engagement. AI now grants people the ability to easily create a song that sounds eerily similar to a popular artist\u2014 a move that can fuel hype and debate, and in turn, manifest virality.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Today, with the current little industry protection and limited public understanding of AI music <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, all artists are at risk of being impersonated \u2014 and all normal people at the risk of being fooled. That\u2019s also what <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/04\/21\/1171032649\/ai-music-heart-on-my-sleeve-drake-the-weeknd\">happened<\/a> around the 2023 AI song, \u201cHeart On My Sleeve\u201d that \u201cfeatured\u201d Drake and The Weeknd. The track generated millions of streams before eventually getting taken down by platforms.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The rise of this deceitful new marketing tactic provokes the more urgent question of how artists can protect and control their intellectual property.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-276088\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Using someone\u2019s work to train AI models is a much murkier question than sampling\u2014another music copyright question that caused industry headaches in previous eras. As lawyers Jason M. Loring and Madison Gaines <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/natlawreview.com\/article\/ai-music-presents-novel-issues-within-current-frameworks\">write about the phenomenon<\/a>, \u201cWhen AI systems learn from human artistic expression, they&#8217;re not just processing data\u2014they&#8217;re absorbing the patterns made manifest in music.\u201d Loring and Gaines distinguish AI tools from sampling because \u201cwhen a human artist samples, they make conscious choices about meaning, context and artistic expression. When AI systems sample, it engages in pattern recognition and statistical recombination.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Jack Harlow directly sampling Fergie\u2019s \u201cGlamorous\u201d in \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yQBImEeXNZ4\">First Class<\/a>,\u201d for example, is much more straightforward to understand than if Harlow\u2019s team had used Fergie to train an AI that helped Harlow craft a brand new song.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Sampling involves direct usage, sonic manipulation and copyright claims; AI training, on the other hand, is essentially a black box, where even the person generating it doesn\u2019t necessarily understand the intricacies of how the AI software is extrapolating patterns from the source material. With AI models that scrape the internet, and \u201ctrain\u201d on millions and billions of other peoples\u2019 material, the question of attribution becomes labyrinthian.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-276089\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            At the moment, the status quo seems to benefit artists like HAVEN. who can take advantage of the murky terrain and claim they are merely \u201cusing AI tools\u201d to create their art, casting off anyone who has questions or concerns as luddites or close minded.
