In short, if \u201cyou do want the page indexed, don\u2019t use a noindex tag in the original page code,\u201d Google wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is new. <\/strong>Google updated <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/crawling-indexing\/javascript\/javascript-seo-basics#:~:text=When%20Google%20encounters%20the%20noindex%20tag%2C%20it%20may%20skip%20rendering%20and%20JavaScript%20execution%2C%20which%20means%20using%20JavaScript%20to%20change%20or%20remove%20the%20robots%20meta%20tag%20from%20noindex%20may%20not%20work%20as%20expected.%20If%20you%20do%20want%20the%20page%20indexed%2C%20don%27t%20use%20a%20noindex%20tag%20in%20the%20original%20page%20code.\">this section<\/a> to read:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWhen Google encounters the noindex tag, it may skip rendering and JavaScript execution, which means using JavaScript to change or remove the robots meta tag from noindex may not work as expected. If you do want the page indexed, don\u2019t use a noindex tag in the original page code.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the past, it read:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIf Google encounters the noindex tag, it skips rendering and JavaScript execution. Because Google skips your JavaScript in this case, there is no chance to remove the tag from the page. Using JavaScript to change or remove the robots meta tag might not work as expected. Google skips rendering and JavaScript execution if the robots meta tag initially contains noindex. If there is a possibility that you do want the page indexed, don\u2019t use a noindex tag in the original page code.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why the change. <\/strong>Google <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/updates#clarifying-noindex-and-javascript\">explained<\/a>, \u201cWhile Google may be able to render a page that uses JavaScript, the behavior of this is not well defined and might change. If there\u2019s a possibility that you do want the page indexed, don\u2019t use a noindex tag in the original page code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care. <\/strong>It may be safer not to use JavaScript for important protocols and blocking of Googlebot or other crawlers.
