{"id":705040,"date":"2025-12-25T00:40:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T21:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/bari-weiss-says-pulling-60-minutes-story-may-seem-radical-but-necessary-for-integrity-of-the-news\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T00:40:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T21:40:11","slug":"bari-weiss-says-pulling-60-minutes-story-may-seem-radical-but-necessary-for-integrity-of-the-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/bari-weiss-says-pulling-60-minutes-story-may-seem-radical-but-necessary-for-integrity-of-the-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Bari Weiss Says Pulling \u201860 Minutes\u2019 Story \u201cMay Seem Radical,\u201d But Necessary for \u201cIntegrity of the News\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBari Weiss is defending her choice to pull a <em>60 Minutes <\/em>story again, this time citing her decision\u2019s seemingly \u201cradical\u201d nature as necessary to restoring Americans\u2019 trust in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a memo sent to staff and signed by Weiss, CBS News president Tom Cibrowski and editors Charles Forelle, and Adam Rubenstein, the CBS News editor-in-chief\u00a0said her last minute decision to pull a story about the experiences of Venezuelans deported to an El Salvadorian prison by the Trump Administration was among the kinds of \u201cnecessary\u201d editorial decisions for the newsroom, even if it \u201ccan cause a firestorm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cNo amount of outrage \u2013 whether from activist organizations or the White House \u2013 will derail us,\u201d the memo reads. \u201cWe are not out to score points with one side of the political spectrum or to win followers on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>. We are out to inform the American public and to get the story right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe continued, attributing a decision that \u201cmay seem radical\u201d to our current \u201cupside-down\u201d political news moment. \u201cSuch editorial decisions can cause a firestorm, particularly on a slow news week. And the standards for fairness we are holding ourselves to, particularly on contentious subjects, will surely feel controversial to those used to doing things one way. But to fulfill our mission, it\u2019s necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWeiss ultimately defended the move, which saw her hold the story after Trump administration officials did not provide on-camera comment for the story, as a decision to restore \u201cthe integrity of the news,\u201d an act that is both \u201cdifficult\u201d and \u201cimportant.\u201d She also seemed to allude to other criticisms around her editorial choices since taking the helm at CBS News, while noting that the newsroom will \u201chave to work hard\u201d to win back Americans\u2019 amid declining trust in news media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cTo win back their trust, we have to work hard. Sometimes that means doing more legwork. Sometimes it means telling unexpected stories. Sometimes it means training our attention on topics that have been overlooked or misconstrued,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAnd sometimes it means holding a piece about an important subject to make sure it is comprehensive and fair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe CBS News editor has continued to face a wave of internal and public criticism around her last minute decision to pull the story from correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, which was produced by Oriana Zill de Granados. Weiss initially defended the decision just days ago in a company call \u2014 and before the segment, \u201cInside CECOT,\u201d streamed through Global TV, the network that has rights to <em>60 Minutes<\/em> in Canada despite having been pulled in the U.S. The clips were shared on social media, where they picked up attention. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFollowing the initial news of her shelving the segment, Weiss pointed again to trust, including trust within the newsroom. \u201cI want to say something about trust: our trust for each other and our trust with the public,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cThe only newsroom I\u2019m interested in running is one in which we are able to have contentious disagreements about the thorniest editorial matters with respect, and, crucially, where we assume the best intent of our colleagues. Anything else is absolutely unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn response to Weiss\u2019 decision and comments, Alfonsi sent her colleagues at <em>60 Minutes<\/em> a message, challenging Weiss\u2019 decision and depiction of the story\u2019s vetting. \u201cOur story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices.\u00a0It is factually correct,\u201d Alfonsi wrote. \u201cIn my view, pulling it now\u2014after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision, it is a political one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThis marks the latest controversy around Weiss\u2019 editorial decision-making since Paramount acquired her publication, <em>The Free Press<\/em>, and she took on the role of editor-in-chief of CBS News earlier this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWeiss is seeking to remake CBS News with the full support of Paramount CEO David Ellison, to whom she reports.
