\n\tMarilyn Granas, who served as the first stand-in for Shirley Temple in films including Bright Eyes<\/em>, Curly Top<\/em> and The Little Colonel<\/em>, has died. She was 98.<\/p>\n

\n\tA longtime Beverly Hills resident, Granas died Oct. 21, her family announced<\/a>. Her nephew, film historian Arthur Grant, said she had dementia.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter Temple had joined Granas and her classmates to work on a number in a dance studio, Granas was asked to stand back-to-back with the child star. \u201cWe were exactly the same size, and they hired me as her stand-in,\u201d she recalled<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe next day, Granas reported for work on Temple\u2019s Baby, Take a Bow<\/em> (1934) \u2014 they were 6 when it reached theaters \u2014 followed by such other films as Bright Eyes<\/em> (1934), Now and Forever<\/em> (1934), Curly Top<\/em> (1935) and The Little Colonel<\/em> (1935).<\/p>\n

\n\tOn that last one, Granas was just a few feet away when Temple and Bill \u201cBojangles\u201d Robinson performed their famed staircase scene together<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShirley and I were best friends,\u201d she noted. \u201cWe had a wonderful time together. We invented all kinds of game<\/a>s, and of course when the sets weren\u2019t being used, we got to play \u2018house\u2019 in all these wonderful places.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBorn in Los Angeles on Aug. 15, 1927, Marilyn Rowena Granas had app<\/a>eared alongside Temple in the 1933 short films Glad Rags to Riches<\/em>, Kid in Hollywood<\/em> and The Kid\u2019s Last Fight<\/em> before getting the stand-in gig.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a 2016 interview<\/a> with Closer<\/em>, Granas said she felt sorry for Temple \u201cbecause her childhood was so unnatural. She didn\u2019t get to go to public school. She didn\u2019t have a lot of friends or get to do kid things, like ride bikes. On the set, it was exclusively the two of us. We never played with other kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to Grant, Granas \u201ckept her Jewish heritage a secret over worries that Shirley\u2019s mother Gertrude\u2019s perceived prejudice might negatively impact both Marilyn\u2019s professional and personal relationship with Shirley,\u201d he wrote in a recent<\/a> <\/a>post<\/a> on CinemaCafe.com.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2020, Granas recalled being on the playground at Wilton Place Elementary when an older girl got off her bicycle, hit her in the face and said, \u201cYou\u2019re a nasty little brat and I hate you. I thought, \u2018What is her problem?\u2019 and I thought, \u2018You know, this celebrity thing has got two sides to it and maybe it\u2019s not so much fun.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGranas travel<\/a>ed the world with her mother and was in art class at Beverly Hills High School when she met Kenneth Anger. She then starred for the director in his first publicly seen film, the 35-minute Escape Episode<\/em>, made in 1944 but not released until a few years later.<\/p>\n

\n\tGranas graduated from UCLA in 1951 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Speech and English, worked in a mailroom at CBS and became a secretary and then an assistant casting director at NBC, where she competed in a \u201cMiss Cinderemmy\u201d glamour contest held by the Television Academy on New Year\u2019s Eve in 1955.<\/p>\n

\n\tOver more than three decades in casting, she helped set up William Morris\u2019 casting department, had her own Beverly Hills-based agency \u2014\u00a0in the 1970s, she brought in actors for the bilingual kids series<\/a> Villa Alegre<\/em> over \u2014 and was an agent as well.<\/p>\n

\n\tGranas avoided talking about working with Temple until she was in her 40s. \u201cI made a new life and chose not to be remembered as being Shirley Temple\u2019s stand-in,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
