\n John Leguizamo is boycotting the 2020 Emmys, citing \u201ccultural apartheid\u201d as his reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t have Latin people, there\u2019s no reason for me to see it,\u201d the comedia<\/a>n and actor, 56, told Yahoo.<\/a><\/p>\n

Awards shows such as the Emmys and the Oscars have been criticized in recent years for their lack of diversity. The #OsarsSoWhite hashtag was created by activist April Reign in January 2015 to draw attention to this phenomenon at the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

This year, the Emmys improved on its recognition of African-American actors, nominating Don Cheadle, Issa Rae, Mahershala Ali, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and more.<\/p>\n

But as Leguizamo points out, no Latinx people got nods this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the point?\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable that our stories aren\u2019t being told \u2026 Like, we\u2019re 50% of the population of Los Angeles and less than 3% of the faces in front of the camera? Less than 2% of the faces behind the camera? Less than 1% of the stories being told by Hollywood streamers and networks? That\u2019s cultural apartheid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leguizamo, who grew up in New York, is best known for films such as \u201cRomeo + Juliet\u201d and \u201cJohn Wick\u201d as well as TV shows such as \u201cER\u201d and \u201cWhen They See Us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 72nd Emmys will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and broadcast live on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. on ABC\n <\/p><\/div>\n
