Google called this update \u201ca regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This December 2025 core update came after waiting five months since the previous core update, the  June 2025 core update. That June update came a few months after Google\u2019s first core update on the 2025 year, the\u00a0March 2025 core update. <\/p>\n<p>In the coming days we will gather data on the impact of this update and share some of that data with you on Search Engine Land.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Google is saying.\u00a0<\/strong>Google\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/status.search.google.com\/incidents\/DsirqJ1gpPRgVQeccPRv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated its Search Status Dashboard<\/a>\u00a0to state:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cReleased the December 2025 core update. The rollout may take up to 3 weeks to complete.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google added on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/googlesearchcentral_google-search-status-dashboard-activity-7404935154072371201-0fKv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThis is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What we saw.\u00a0<\/strong>The initial rollout touched down within a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-december-2025-core-update-intense-impact-40593.html\">few days<\/a>\u00a0after the update was announced, specifically on December 13, 2025.  Then on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-december-2025-core-update-volatility-saturday-40632.html\">December 20th<\/a>, we saw another big spike in volatility. Like with all core updates, some sites saw huge declines in ranking visibility, some saw some big improvements and many saw no changes.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also recommend you watch this <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8hWV3DVSRf0\">video from Glenn Gabe<\/a> on the December core update.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to do if you are hit.\u00a0<\/strong>Google did not share any new guidance specific to the December 2025 core update. However, in the past, Google has offered advice on what to consider if a core update negatively impacts your site:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There aren\u2019t specific actions to take to recover. A negative rankings impact may not signal anything is wrong with your pages.<\/li>\n<li>Google offered a list of\u00a0questions to consider if your site is hit by a core update.<\/li>\n<li>Google said you can see some recovery between core updates, but the biggest change would be after another core update.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short: write helpful content for people and not to rank in search engines.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing new or special that creators need to do for this update as long as they\u2019ve been making satisfying content meant for people. For those that might not be ranking as well, we strongly encourage reading our\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/fundamentals\/creating-helpful-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creating helpful, reliable, people-first content<\/a>\u00a0help page,\u201d Google said previously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more details on Google core updates, you can read\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/updates\/core-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google\u2019s documentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous core updates.\u00a0<\/strong>Here\u2019s a timeline and our coverage of recent core updates:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The\u00a0June 2025 core update\u00a0was on June 30 and ended on\u00a0July 17.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0March 2025 core update\u00a0was on Mar. 13 and ended on\u00a0Mar. 27.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0December 2024 core update\u00a0was on Dec. 12 and ended on\u00a0Dec. 18.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0November 2024 core update\u00a0was on Nov. 11 and ended on\u00a0Dec. 5.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0August 2024 core update\u00a0was on Aug. 15 and ended on\u00a0Sept. 3.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0March 2024 core update\u00a0was on March 5 and ended on\u00a0April 19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.\u00a0<\/strong>Now that this December 2025 core update is done, you can start to dig in to see how you are your clients were impacted. You can review Google\u2019s guidance and continue to improve your site, which hopefully will lead to better Google ranking in the future.
