\n\tIsiah Whitlock Jr., the actor who portrayed State Senator Clayton \u201cClay\u201d Davis on HBO\u2019s The Wire<\/em>, has died. He was 71.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhitlock\u2019s manager, Brian Liebman, announced his death Tuesday on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr. If you knew him \u2013 you loved him,\u201d Liebman wrote. \u201cA brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBorn in Indiana in 1954, Whitlock began studying theater at\u00a0Southwest Minnesota State University. Following his 1976 graduation, he attended San Francisco\u2019s American Conservatory Theater and earned his first onscreen credit in the 1981 TV movie A Christmas Carol<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhitlock went on to app<\/a>ear in several projects led by Spike Lee, including 25th Hour<\/em>,\u00a0She Hate Me<\/em>,\u00a0Red Hook Summer<\/em>,\u00a0Chi-Raq<\/em>,\u00a0BlacKkKlansman<\/em> and\u00a0Da 5 Bloods<\/em>. In 2002, he joined The Wire<\/em> as the corrupt state senator Clayton \u201cClay\u201d Davis, a role he played through the series<\/a>\u2019 end in 2008.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cToday I Learned Of The Passing Of My Dear Beloved Brother ISIAH WHITLOCK. GOD BLESS,\u201d Lee wrote on Instagram Tuesday. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhitlock most recently appeared on Netflix\u2019s Emmy-nominated series The Residence<\/em>, which starred Uzo Aduba. He also acted in Showtime\u2019s drama Your Honor<\/em> across its first and second installments, and Veep<\/em>, where he portrayed Secretary of Defense George Maddox.<\/p>\n

\n\tOne of his earliest appearances on the silver screen came in 1990 with Goodfellas<\/em>, where he played a doctor. Whitlock has additionally appeared in films including Disney\u2019s Enchanted<\/em> (2007), Cedar Rapids<\/em> (2011), the Chris Evans-led Lightyear<\/em> and Elizabeth Banks\u2019 Cocaine Bear<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhitlock is expected to be heard in the 2026 Pixar-Disney film Hoppers<\/em>.<\/p>\n
