The Reiner family and Hollywood\u2019s finest weren\u2019t the only ones to experience an immense loss in the murders of Rob<\/strong> and Michele Reiner<\/strong>\u2026 For one death row inmate, \u201ca part of\u201d himself was lost.<\/p>\n

Rob and Michele\u2019s unwavering activism isn\u2019t up for debate. Beyond Rob\u2019s sprawling career as a prolific director, and beyond Michele\u2019s massive success as a photographer and producer, the couple consistently stayed dedicated to fighting injustices in the world. And their unending battle led them to cross paths with Nanon Williams<\/strong>, a death row inmate currently serving his 34th year in prison for a murder he says he didn\u2019t commit. According to NBC News<\/a><\/em>, Williams had formed a beautiful relationship with the Reiners over the past decade.<\/p>\n

At just 17 years old, Williams was involved in a Texas shooting that took the life of a 19-year-old named Adonius Collier<\/strong>. Alongside Vaal Guevara<\/strong>, Williams was put on trial in 1995 where ballistics expert Robert Baldwin<\/strong> claimed the bullet recovered from Collier\u2019s skull matched Williams\u2019 .25-caliber handgun — not Guevara\u2019s .22 Derringer. Guevara ultimately pleaded guilty to a drug charge and testified against Williams, and ended up receiving a 10-year sentence, for which he only served four years. Williams, on the other hand, was sentenced to death.<\/p>\n

Williams has maintained for years that he didn\u2019t kill Collier, but was shipped off to death row nonetheless. However, three years after his conviction, the evidence used to convict Williams began crumbling. The ballistics expert wrote in a 1998 letter to the prosecutor that he\u2019d been wrong, and that the bullet recovered from Collier\u2019s skull actually did come from Guevara\u2019s .22 Derringer. After a few more years of deliberation, a state judge requested a new trial, but the Texas Court of Criminal App<\/a>eals<\/strong> rejected any such thing.<\/p>\n

In 2003, Williams began working on a poem called Parallel Universe<\/em> in which he pondered the what ifs of life and how his life could have turned out differently. In 2005, the Supreme Court outlawed executions for crimes committed by juveniles, so Williams\u2019 sentence was reduced to life without parole.<\/p>\n

In 2013, Williams\u2019 poem premiered at the National Black Theatre<\/strong> in a special event called Lyrics from Lockdown<\/em>. Three years after that, Rob and Michele attended the same show and became struck by Williams\u2019 words and asked to meet him. From then on, the trio began developing a tight relationship as the late couple began advocating for Williams\u2019 release. Rob and Michele would go on to virtually introduce Williams to their children Jake<\/strong>, Romy<\/strong>, and Nick<\/strong>, who has since been charged with their murders, and even offered the inmate a place to live if he ever got out of prison, per NBC News<\/em>. Romy told the outlet Williams \u201cbecame like family\u201d and that she called him big brother.<\/p>\n

Williams remained in constant communication with the Reiners, who would frequently email him. On the Friday before their December 14 deaths, Rob and Michele attended another live reading of some of Williams\u2019 prison experience at an LA theater. They were joined by Romy and friend Billy Crystal<\/strong> and his wife Janice<\/strong>, as well as several members of Williams\u2019 family, including his mother, sister, and the woman he married from behind bars.<\/p>\n

Two days later, however, Williams\u2019 turned on his state-issued tablet and saw the report about two people being found dead in the Reiner family home. Immedia<\/a>tely, he began writing to Michele. In an interview from behind bars, he told NBC News<\/em> he wrote:<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease, this can\u2019t be true. Please tell me the news is lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sadly, as we all know, the tragic news turned out to be true.<\/p>\n

In prison, receiving communication from the outside world can take hours if now DAYS as each and every correspondence must be vetted. So in the days that followed Rob and Michele\u2019s deaths, Williams\u2019 received posthumous emails from them. One in particular, dated Dec. 13 at 5:26 p.m. PST, was sent to Williams from Michele after attending the Lyrics from Lockdown<\/em> event. The subject line read, \u201cUgly Side of Beautiful.\u201d The full message went on:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure you have heard from [your wife] but the show last night was amazing. We\u2019ve seen it several times but he keeps improving it and it gets better and better. He has more videos of you which are great. He\u2019s so talented. We all said that we can\u2019t wait to watch it with you. And your whole family was there, it was great. I loved your mother. She is so beautiful and I told her that she must have done something right because you turned out so well. And your sisters were there and all the kids. And Marc Howard and his girlfriend. We also brought Billy Crystal, who loved it and was so moved by it. I wrote to Ben Wolf to get more details, I\u2019m waiting on his response.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She signed off:<\/p>\n

\u201cHope you\u2019re doing well, love you, Michele\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Williams told NBC News<\/em> the Reiners were \u201can integral part of my life\u201d and said \u201cThey became a part of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cRob and Michele didn\u2019t want credit for trying to help me. It was just because they loved me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Romy also wrote kind words about the relationship her parents cultivated with Williams:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cMy parents spoke about him with such love. He has taught me more about life and human compassion than anyone I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In a statement, Jake told the outlet his parents \u201cwere fierce in doing everything in their power\u201d to help Williams get out of prison. \u201cI know wherever they are, they are beaming with pride for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

What a beautiful story. We hope Rob and Michele\u2019s family and their powerful friends continue to fight for Williams.<\/p>\n
