Slammed with apartment showings and paperwork, real estate broker Kyle Haas had no time to head to the Lower East Side and check on a condo building\u2019s construction progress for a client looking to move. So, he hired someone to beam live video footage of the building from the street directly to his phone using a new app called Mole<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a timesaver for me .\u2009.\u2009. a money saver as well,\u201d said Haas, a Compass broker, who added that at just $4, \u201c[it\u2019s] certainly less than a cab.\u201d<\/p>\n

Debuted in July and billed as the \u201cUber for eyeballs,\u201d Mole allows users (called \u201cmoles\u201d) to connect in the app with \u201cagents,\u201d who stream live locations from their phones with the purpose of giving \u201cpeople the ability just to see something simple through someone else\u2019s smartphone,\u201d the app\u2019s 42-year-old founder, Avery Pack, told The Post.<\/p>\n

The uses of the app run the gamut. Moles might want to take in a favorite city landmark virtually, for instance, or check to see if the nanny is really at the park with their kid. For Pack, it was key that the connection between moles and agents remains anonymous.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat peek of something has some value to someone else, and who are we to judge?\u201d said Pack, who added that the app now boasts more than 5,000 users.<\/p>\n

One is Sam Puckowitz, a 19-year-old Manhattan native home for the summer from the University of Chicago. He received a request from a mole to check and see if the statue of Christopher Columbus still stood following the height of the Black Lives Matter protests in June.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was pretty interesting,\u201d said Puckowitz, adding that, given the app\u2019s anonymous mole-to-agent relationship, he didn\u2019t know why the user specifically requested to see that statue. \u201c[I took] a little video and stayed there for a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Puckowitz has found that some users request views for certain conveniences. While out and about on the Upper East Side, a mole tapped Puckowitz to see if there was a long line at a nearby Insomnia Cookies location.<\/p>\n

\u201cTime is money in New York, and this really shows it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The app charges a minimum of $1.50 for the connection between mole and agent, then an additional 50 cents per minute for streaming.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do it casually throughout the day,\u201d said Puckowitz. \u201cYou can make some cash.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nyle Hutchinson, a 19-year-old George Washington University sophomore who\u2019s taking classes virtually from home in Mount Vernon, NY, this semester, also tested out the app over the summer. He fires up the app during his frequent walks through Central Park.<\/p>\n

He had at least one request related to the pandemic, he said \u2014 to see if people in Sheep Meadow and other open areas were wearing masks. On another occasion, a mole asked Hutchinson to jog around the park\u2019s reservoir for several minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI rarely get the reasoning for why,\u201d he said of these requests, which also included visiting the Apple Store in Grand Central Terminal to see if it had closed down.<\/p>\n

Another feature on the app is called a \u201ctunnel,\u201d where agents can broadcast a live feed to everyone on the app.<\/p>\n

Puckowitz took one of his own recently at Bloomingdale\u2019s. \u201cIt was super empty, the store just feels different,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Realizing that what you see is interesting to strangers, Puckowitz said, is \u201creally, really satisfying.<\/p>\n
