\n An angry parent of a Big App<\/a>le public school kid and a frustrated teacher blasted Mayor Bill de Blasio during a radio interview Friday over his bungling the reopening of city schools amid the coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n

One Brooklyn parent who called in to WNYC\u2019s \u201cThe Brian Lehrer Show\u201d during the mayor\u2019s weekly appearance pressed de Blasio as to why he waited so long to again delay in-person learning for city school kids \u2014 leaving working parents scrambling ahead of next week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy has the mayor waited this long to make this decision? How are we supposed to manage like this?\u201d asked the parent, who identified herself as Ellen.<\/p>\n

De Blasio on Thursday made the bombshell 11th-hour announcement that the city will push back in-person learning for public school students \u2014 for the second time \u2014 in all grades above pre-K just four days before students were set to return.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner cited teacher shortages within the Department of Education, caused by the blended instruction approach, among the major reasons why he took the action.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat staffing shortfall,\u201d Ellen correctly pointed out, \u201chas been well known and the principals have been talking about this for some time. This just seems very late to make this decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellen also expressed her confusion on the school start date for her children, who she said attend a joint District 75 and District 15 school.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been a real challenging situation, so I want to be clear, I do feel for any parent who is trying to make sense of this under \u2014 particularly, these horrible conditions that we\u2019re dealing with general<\/a>ly,\u201d de Blasio said in response to Ellen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been trying to restart the entire school system with in-person, with blended, with remote \u2014 fully remote, get the staffing right to the right places, with changing numbers constantly, in terms of who\u2019s going to be in school and who\u2019s not \u2014 both staff and students,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

De Blasio claimed that trying to reopen the city\u2019s schools has \u201cbeen a greater challenge than anyone foresaw.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, it\u2019s painful, but we\u2019re going to get there and we\u2019re going to get there quickly and we\u2019re going to make sure it\u2019s done right. We\u2019re going to make sure it\u2019s safe,\u201d said de Blasio, adding, \u201cI do feel the frustration that parents are feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the nation\u2019s largest school system is \u201cup and running,\u201d he said, \u201cIt will have been worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Queens teacher who called in to the radio show explained how the constantly changing schedules of educators and students between remote and blended learning are \u201creally impeding our ability to be ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said the current school plan \u201cis really shortchanging kids\u201d when it comes to live instruction.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you had listened to us, if you\u2019d listened to what schools really needed, we could be doing a better job to serve our students,\u201d the teacher railed at de Blasio. \u201cWe should have been spending the summer improving our remote learning plans and now we\u2019re short on teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The educator went on, \u201cI\u2019m really frustrated because you and the chancellor [Richard Carranza] do not listen to principals and teachers who know their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio told the woman that he \u201cfundamentally\u201d disagrees with her claim that teachers and principals are not being listened to.<\/p>\n

\u201cI truly believe we\u2019re trying to do something extremely difficult here,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cBut I believe it is based on that most foundational concept that we asked the stakeholders, the ultimate stakeholders \u2014 the people we serve, the parents and children \u2014 what they wanted, what they needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor insisted, \u201cWhere we start in September is not where we end \u2014 we\u2019re going to keep working at making it better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019ve been listening to people and trying to make adjustments based on that feedback,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
