\n\tRoger Allers, an Oscar and Tony-nominated animated film director, best known for helming 1994\u2019s The Lion King<\/em>, died on Saturday. He was 76.<\/p>\n

\n\tAllers died suddenly at his home in Santa Monica, California, following a short illness, a Disney Animation spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tBorn on June 29, 1949, in Rye, New York, Allers found a passion for animation at a young age and later went on to receive a fine arts degree from Arizona State University. <\/p>\n

\n\tHe made his directorial debut with\u00a0The Lion King<\/em> animated feature for Walt Disney Animation Studios, alongside co-director Rob Minkoff. The movie was a massive box office success, earning nearly\u00a0$979 million\u00a0worldwide, not adjusted for inflation,\u00a0in its initial theatrical run, making it the highest-grossing film of 1994.<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore The Lion King<\/em>, Allers worked on several other Disney animated features, including Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Oliver and Company and Rescuers Down Under<\/em>. He also helped develop 1982\u2019s Tron<\/em>, the\u00a0first major feature film to extensively use CGI.<\/p>\n

\n\tDisney CEO Bob Iger shared in a statement, \u201cRoger Allers was a creative visionary whose many contributions to Disney will live on for generations to come. He understood the power of great storytelling \u2014 how unforgettable characters, emotion and music can come together to create something timeless. His work helped define an era of animation that continues to inspire audiences around the world, and we are deeply grateful for everything he gave to Disney. Our hearts are with his family, friends and collaborators.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAllers also adapted the screenplay for the Broadway musical The Lion King<\/em>, with co-author Irene Mecchi, earning him a Tony nomination in 1998 for best book of a musical.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2006, he co-directed the animated movie Open Season<\/em> for Sony Studios, as well as wrote and directed the animated adaptation of Kahlil Gibran\u2019s\u00a0The Prophet<\/em> in 2015.<\/p>\n

\n\tAllers also received an Academy Award nomination for best animated short film for 2006\u2019s The Little Matchgirl<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tHis other credits include Watership Down<\/em>, The Bugs Bunny\/Road-Runner Movie<\/em>, Return to Never Land<\/em>, Ted<\/em>, Back to the Jurassic<\/em> and Ted 2<\/em>, among others.<\/p>\n

\n\tAllers is survived by his two children, Leah and Aidan.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Lion King<\/em> producer Don Hahn wrote in a tribute, \u201cEvery once in a while, life puts someone in our path who helps us see more clearly.\u00a0 Roger was that person for me, and for so many of us who worked with him.\u00a0 He was the rarest of people: endlessly curious, playful, and deeply human, always eager to tell stories that reminded us of the wonder in life.\u00a0 He lives on in his work, and in the hearts of all of us who were lucky enough to know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
