\n While filming \u201cGoodFellas\u201d \u2014 one of the all-time-great New York movies, in the gangster genre or otherwise \u2014 Ray Liotta had no clue he was making a classic as he was being directed by a legendary fella: Martin Scorsese.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the middle of it, I didn\u2019t know how it was gonna turn out,\u201d said Liotta, 65, who stars as mobster Henry Hill in the real-life story based on Nicholas Pileggi\u2019s 1985 book \u201cWiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family<\/a>.\u201d \u201cIt was just a lot of fun playing make-believe with all these other people who loved to play make-believe.\u201d<\/p>\n

But 30 years after \u201cGoodFellas\u201d opened on Sept. 19, 1990, it remains an unforgettable experience for the actor. \u201cI don\u2019t know where my keys are right now, but I can remember just about every scene and what happ<\/a>ened that day, because a movie like that just had such a big imprint on you,\u201d said the Union, NJ, native.<\/p>\n

Indeed, \u201cGoodFellas,\u201d which also stars Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino, was nominated for six Academy Awards. Although it lost to \u201cDances with Wolves\u201d for Best Picture and Best Director (Scorsese lost to Kevin Costner), Pesci took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and the movie was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2000, cementing its place in cinema history.<\/p>\n

\u201cMartin Scorsese made a masterpiece,\u201d said Bracco, 65, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance as Henry Hill\u2019s wife, Karen. \u201cHe made a great film.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Liotta first prepared for his role by reading \u201cWiseguy.\u201d \u201cI read the book, and when I got the role, Marty took myself and Lorraine and Nick Pileggi and the casting agent to Rao\u2019s [restaurant] in Harlem,\u201d he said. \u201cI talked a lot with Nick, and he gave me the tapes that he used for interviewing Henry for the book. I would take my mother\u2019s car and listen over and over and over again.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t meet the real Henry Hill before playing him, though. \u201cMarty didn\u2019t want me to meet Henry before, which was fine,\u201d said Liotta.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn-born Bracco \u2014 who knew Scorsese and De Niro through her then-boyfriend, actor Harvey Keitel \u2014 never met the real Karen either. \u201cShe was not interested,\u201d said Bracco, who instead drew from her own experience growing up in Westbury, LI. \u201cI knew the whole Jewish thing because I\u2019d grown up in a neighborhood with all Jewish girls.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bracco suggested Debi Mazar to Scorsese for the part of Sandy, Henry\u2019s coke-conspirator mistress. The two had previously met while Bracco was in the play \u201cGoose and Tomtom\u201d with Madonna, who had Mazar as her makeup artist. \u201cI love that she got it,\u201d said Bracco.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2009\u2018GoodFellas\u2019 was my first big movie,\u201d said Queens native Mazar, 56, who now lives in Florence, Italy. \u201cI was very familiar with the tone of the movie, the characters of the movie. I had relatives that kinda reminded me of some of those people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another Queens native, Christopher Serrone, played young Henry Hill at the beginning of \u201cGoodFellas,\u201d making his acting debut. Only 12 when he started filming, he had to tough it out wearing hard contact lenses to match Liotta\u2019s blue eyes. \u201cThose contact lenses were hand-painted in Italy to be an exact replica of Ray\u2019s eyes: $3,000 per lens, and I had two sets,\u201d said Serrone, now 44. \u201cI could only wear them for about a half-hour to an hour at a time. There was a lot of going in and out of the makeup trailer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mount Vernon native Michael Imperioli, who played the bartender Spider, actually thought he was reading for Pesci\u2019s part of trigger-happy Tommy. \u201cI thought I was auditioning for Joe Pesci\u2019s character because the character Tommy in the book was 21 years old for a lot of that story,\u201d said Imperioli, 54, who was then 23. \u201cI knew Scorsese liked improvisation, so I just started making stuff up, and he loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Doing his own stunts proved to be dangerous for Imperioli in the scene where Spider gets gunned down by Tommy. \u201cThe problem was, I had a glass in my hand as I walked to the table, and the prop person forgot to give me a breakaway glass,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd when I hit the ground in the first take, the glass shattered and cut open two of my fingers really bad. Some production assistant drives me to the hospital in Queens. I get out at the hospital, and everybody rushes to me because I have three bullet holes in my chest, and I\u2019m trying to explain to the people [that] I cut my hand, but they won\u2019t listen. They think I\u2019m delirious \u2019cause of these bullet holes, there\u2019s blood everywhere. They think I\u2019m about to drop dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Serrone, who fondly recalls Sorvino singing opera between takes, had his own memorable experience filming a stunt scene when young Henry smashes car windows. After nailing the scene on the first take in the middle of the night, Scorsese rewarded him with a treat. \u201cI go over to him and he hands me a white box. The bottom of the box is still warm,\u201d he said. \u201cI open the box, and there\u2019s a dozen fresh-baked cannoli inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mazar also survived her own dangerous moment. \u201cI\u2019m cutting the coke with Ray Liotta in my apartment, and it\u2019s a really messy scene, we\u2019re high,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then I had to throw a coke scale, and I think I missed Martin Scorsese\u2019s head by, like, an inch! He just let us go for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

For her part, Bracco came up with the idea for Karen to reward Henry with a b\u2009-\u2009-\u2009-\u2009job after he gives her a wad of cash to shop. \u201cThat was my idea,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were young! And I felt that when anybody, who\u2019s your husband especially, gives you thousands of dollars, that that would be fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bracco also got to use both of her daughters, Stella and Margaux, in the film to play one of Karen\u2019s daughters at two different ages. \u201cMarty needed to cast kids, and I said, \u2018Could you use my kids? I\u2019d like to see them. I haven\u2019t seen them in weeks,\u2019\u2009\u201d she said, noting she was concerned some of the tenser scenes would upset her youngest. \u201cRay and I would talk to Stella before we would do any of these scenes and say, \u2018Mommy\u2019s just acting, and we\u2019re really playing around.\u2019 And we\u2019d always hug and kiss each other after the scene, so Stella would see that we\u2019re just playing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Liotta had real-life family drama going on behind the scenes. \u201cMy mother was very sick at that time,\u201d he said. \u201cShe had cancer and actually died of cancer in the middle of [filming].\u201d<\/p>\n

It ended up lessening the intimidation factor of the more experienced De Niro, Sorvino and Pesci, who came to Liotta\u2019s mother\u2019s funeral. \u201cWhen you see what the important things are in life,\u201d Liotta said, \u201cyou can play pretend with a bunch of people, no matter how big they are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Liotta \u2014 who appears in the upcoming film \u201cThe Many Saints of Newark,\u201d a prequel to \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d<\/a> \u2014 would finally meet the real Henry Hill after \u201cGoodFellas\u201d opened. \u201cI got a call out of the blue. He said, \u2018Hey, this is Henry Hill. I\u2019d love to sit down and talk with ya.\u2019 I said, \u2018OK. I\u2019ll meet you.\u2019 And the first thing he said was, \u2018Thanks for not making me look like a scumbag!\u2019 And I said, \u2018Serious? Did you see the movie? You cheated on your wife, you were dealing drugs when your crew told you not to.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n

Serrone, who briefly met Hill on set, would reconnect with him years later through social media<\/a> and go on to forge a friendship with him. In fact, Lisa Caserta \u2014 Hill\u2019s fianc\u00e9e at the time of his death in 2012 \u2014 gave Serrone some of his personal items, including his favorite hat and some paintings he had done, after he passed away. \u201cOn Henry\u2019s birthday, I always send her a message,\u201d said the actor, who now lives in Green Mountain, Colo., and still works in film.<\/p>\n

Of course, Bracco and Imperioli went on to achieve more mob glory in \u201cThe Sopranos.\u201d \u201cPeople scream out \u2018Karen,\u2019 and they scream out \u2018Dr. Melfi,\u2019 too,\u201d said Bracco, who will renovate her Sicilian home in the HGTV series \u201cMy Big Italian Adventure,\u201d premiering Oct. 30.<\/p>\n

But Bracco still has issues with her character\u2019s legacy<\/a> of standing by her man. \u201cWhat I didn\u2019t like was a lot of people, or women, glorified her, and I found that really sad \u2019cause look what happened to her in the end,\u201d Bracco said of Karen. \u201cI mean, going into the Witness Protection [Program] was no fun and game<\/a>s. I don\u2019t think it really ended up great for her.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
