The Chicago quartet\u2019s November EP <i>joy is no knocking nation<\/i> stacks semi-intelligible vocals atop brash saxophone and serrated guitar until total collapse seems all but inevitable. From the crashing waves of \u201cit\u2019s a whole \u2018who shot john\u2019 story\u201d to the thicket of whispers on \u201cnew guy (big softie),\u201d these songs carefully ratchet tension up and down in queasily thrilling cycles. The big payoff comes with \u201cfritz all over you,\u201d where a viciously punky frontispiece gives way to a sweetly disarming coda.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The FADER caught up with ira glass to chat about &#8220;Ville Mentality&#8221; by J. Cole, <i>Breathless<\/i> by Godard, matching tattoos, not having tattoos, and the best things they&#8217;ve bought for less than $100. He gets it at every diner we stop at on tour. I had a jejune little psychological horror novella on there I was writing because I was hyperfixated on Stephen King and NaNoWriMo used to be a thing on Tumblr and that .docx is now lost to the ether. <br \/>I remember making a Spotify account when I was 16 just so I could listen to the entirety of \u201cVille Mentality\u201d by J. Cole. Before that, I was using <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>-to-.mp3 websites to download songs onto the Job Corps computer so I could upload them to my dumb phone. When I was in 7th grade, I was in IOP and my dad told me about the drummer of this band I was getting into, Smashing Pumpkins, and I equated all of my middle school Hot Topic social issues with this dude\u2019s substance abuse problems. When you\u2019re that young and vulnerable you let anything give you a sense of direction. It was pretty good, but someone was smacking gum kind of loud throughout the whole film so I was a bit distracted. <br \/>JILL: I watched <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iAuqDI4EAl4\">Breathless<\/a><\/i> (1960), dir. Godard and found it to be goofy and sweet. The main character is a lovable asshole. Lots of interesting long shots. <br \/>LANDON: <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3S4rxnjwFDg\">Klute<\/a><\/i> (1971) at Lise\u2019s cinema club. It was a fine movie but I thought it was strange they kept saying \u201cit\u2019s a Klute-eat-Klute world\u201d.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>When you\u2019re not making music, how do you spend your free time?<\/b><br \/>LISE: I feel like I\u2019m just washing dishes over and over. My side of the kitchen sink is never empty. I feel bad about it but also impotent; it can\u2019t be helped. I\u2019ve \u201cbeen into\u201d long baths, watching Intervention (with a critical lens), and listening to This Jungian Life. The \u201cSoothe and Sleep\u201d Dr. Teal\u2019s Foaming Bath is pretty okay, though I haven\u2019t tried the other formulations. But we used to cover Jonathan Richman\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rg9_8L6ueIQ\">I\u2019m Straight<\/a>\u201d and people had plenty of wrong ideas about that.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>What\u2019s a song you\u2019d want to cover and why?<\/b><br \/>LISE: I always thought it would be kind of interesting to cover a GG Allin song as a woman, but I don\u2019t think I could get the rest of the band on board. <br \/>LANDON: \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fhAmkEB94fA\">Diana<\/a>\u201d by Comus. We tend to take our covers and make them more evil or something while also respecting the source material. This song is already kinda evil but it\u2019s on all acoustic instruments so I\u2019d love to see what we could do with our setup. My skull was throbbing but I couldn\u2019t hold myself back from thrashing around. I was also sick when Landon and I saw <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jeromesdreamforever\/\">Jerome\u2019s Dream<\/a> at ZBR Fest in 2023. I didn\u2019t think they were very good because they only played their new dude-y fry scream material, but we had a lot of fun yelling, \u201cPlay Double Who!\u201d. At some point, someone found a lost phone in the pit and held it up, yelling \u201cPhone! Phone! Phone!\u201d Me and Landon started screaming, \u201cJerome! Jerome! Jerome!\u201d<br \/>LANDON: I went with my friend and her dad to see Japandroids when I was 14 or something and I was in the mosh and crowd surfing and stage diving, doing all that rowdy stuff. They shared a bill with A Place to Bury Strangers and Oliver played his guitar with a strobe light and it gave me permanent ear damage.
