In December 2024, the pop star <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/music\/news\/charli-xcx-brat-ariana-grande-advice-acting-debut-1236233807\/\">told <i>Variety<\/i> <\/a>that she was thinking about the marketing for the album long before she made the music. Her intention, according to the album&#8217;s creative deck that she later <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/charli-xcx-shares-brat-vision-1235866720\/\">publicly shared,<\/a> was to use her fans, her \u201cAngels,\u201d to turn the project into a global fanfare. \u201cThe Angels are ready and waiting. This is the moment,\u201d she wrote. Inadvertently, those lines likely also manifested her new A24 film, <i>The Moment<\/i>, out today, January 30.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe moment\u201d has turned into, <i>well<\/i>, many. <i>brat<\/i> came out in June 2024 and since then Charli\u2019s gone on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2024\/sep\/24\/charli-xcx-sweat-tour-msg\">tour with Troye Sivan<\/a>, released <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/culture\/product-recommendations\/charli-xcx-h-and-m-a-w-2024-campaign-how-to-shop-collection-online-1235763584\/\">endless<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69206\/1\/charli-xcx-saint-laurent-campaign-glen-luchford\">brand<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/culture\/product-recommendations\/charli-xcx-announces-partnership-with-converse-1235811722\/\">partnerships<\/a>, and kickstarted endless, mind-numbing discourses about everything from the nature of her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/defector.com\/charli-xcx-lorde-and-the-trap-of-the-girls-girl\">authenticity<\/a> to her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/taylor-swift-explains-lyrics-to-rumoured-charli-xcx-diss-track-actually-romantic-3897079\">purported drug use<\/a>, to her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/charli-xcx-and-lorde-open-up-about-their-friendship.html\">fraught relationships<\/a> with her peer pop stars, and to the very idea of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/thepitch\/brat-summer-is-dead-long-live-brat-summer\/\">how long<\/a> an album cycle deserves to last.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-277211\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            That last question is at the heart of the film, directed by music video director and longtime Charli collaborator <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aidanzamiri\/?hl=en\">Aidan Zamiri<\/a>. In the film, her label, Atlantic (who also produced <i>The Moment<\/i>), is giddy about the (surprise) success of Charli\u2019s new album. Bro-ey A&amp;Rs make condescending references to her cult \u201cscene\u201d prior to the album, but remark, almost in awe, about just how huge the whole <i>brat<\/i> phenomenon has become. They want to keep it going until \u201cnext summer.\u201d Charli, playing a heightened version of herself, also wants to keep the water boiling even as she wonders aloud to her <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> manager (played by Isaac Cole Powell) if the whole \u201c<i>brat<\/i> forever thing is cringe.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cEverything is cringe,\u201d he replies flatly.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-277212\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Moment | Official Trailer HD | A24\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pxqhi7Sgvu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-277213\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            It\u2019s this ambivalence that haunts Charli, her team, and the label, throughout the rest of the film, ultimately leading to a horrific conclusion. If \u201ceverything\u201d is cringe, then why should anyone try at all to remain cutting edge or honest? If everything is \u201ccringe,\u201d then nothing at all really matters.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <i>The Moment<\/i> is a horror movie. Yes \u2014 there is blood and paranoia and a spiral into the abyss. But more meaningfully, the film depicts the horrors of becoming a pawn of a corporate machine, and losing your sense of purpose along the way.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Throughout the film, Charli expresses a consistent feeling of overwhelm. Her team brings brand deals and obligations to her, and she\u2019s so lost in the flurry of getting through her day, and navigating the now-growing hoard around her, that she says yes to essentially everything thrown her way.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-277218\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>If \u201ceverything\u201d is cringe, then why should anyone try at all to remain cutting edge or honest?<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-277214\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            That\u2019s how she ends up getting paired with deeply condescending art-bro-guru Johannes (played by Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd) as the director of her concert film. She also signs off on an ill-advised <i>brat<\/i> credit card. And she ends up becoming creatively estranged from those closest to her, like her creative director Celeste (played with confidence by Hailey Gates), who is committed to Charli\u2019s unapologetic, NSFW initial vision of <i>brat<\/i>. In <i>The Moment<\/i>, Charli actually becomes a sellout, but shilling yourself isn\u2019t positioned as subversive in the film. It\u2019s sad.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            It\u2019s hard not to see the film\u2019s final horrific turn toward corporatized pop stardom as also being, in some ways, about Charli\u2019s (and perhaps every pop artist\u2019s) music rival, Taylor Swift. When Charli relents to Johannes\u2019s vision, she dons <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DNUBdFRh7CY\/\"><i>Life of a Showgirl<\/i> glitter<\/a>, she reaches her arm out to the crowd in very <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/JyviqFGo218\">Swift fashion<\/a>, she makes smiling speeches to the crowd. Her transformation into a Swift-like pop politician is as horrific as the final chapter of <i>The Substance<\/i> \u2014 not because Swift is so terrible, but because all of it is so untrue for Charli. And it\u2019s sad for us to witness someone deflate themselves into clich\u00e9.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Thankfully, <i>The Moment<\/i>, as a film, avoids such a fate.
