But that is not the case in young German writer-director Kai St\u00e4nicke\u2019s feature film debut <em>Trial of Hein<\/em> (<em>Der Heimatlose<\/em>). But if you have had an experience of returning home to find that both this home and you yourself have changed, you will recognize the simmering tension and psychological undertones of this cinematic exploration of identity, memory, belonging, and the restrictions that communities can impose on us. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe film tells the story of Hein, who, after 14 years on the mainland, returns to the place he is from, the only village on a remote island in the North Sea. To his surprise, the close-knit community no longer recognizes him. That is even true for his childhood friend Friedemann, who distances himself from the visitor despite their once unbreakable bond. The island community even convenes a village court to determine whether Hein is who he claims to be. The court hearings make evident that Hein\u2019s memories of his youth sharply differ from the recollections shared by witnesses. The mood in the village shifts from suspicion to open hostility as the locals become more and more convinced that Hein is an impostor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cOn the verge of losing everything, Hein desperately searches for proof to validate his memories \u2013 only to realize what he has long refused to see,\u201d teases a synopsis. Indeed, <em>Trial of Hein<\/em> takes us onto the terrain of self-deception and self-acceptance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe movie, world premiering at the Berlin Film Festival as the opening film of the Perspectives section of new voices on Feb. 13, stars Paul Boche, Philip G\u00fcnsch, Philip Froissant, Emilia Sch\u00fcle, Jeanette Hain, Sebastian Blomberg, and Stephanie Amarell. Written and directed by St\u00e4nicke, the film features cinematography courtesy of Florian Mag, with editing handled by Susanne Ocklitz. In some ways, it\u2019s my story.\u00a0And\u00a0it\u2019s based on\u00a0my\u00a0own\u00a0experience. I grew up in a small rural town in Germany in the 1990s, and growing up there, I felt that I couldn\u2019t\u00a0truly be myself\u00a0for much of my youth. As a kid and as a teenager, you don\u2019t fully understand it,\u00a0but\u00a0when I moved to larger cities to study, I finally accepted parts of myself that I couldn\u2019t before. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd when I came back to my hometown, I had so many emotions.\u00a0Most\u00a0of all,\u00a0I felt\u00a0that it was another life that I had lived there. It was a life that wasn\u2019t really my own, or it wasn\u2019t fully my own, and I could never go back to this life. This is where the core idea for the film came from.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>I loved how Hein\u2019s story also felt timely and like something I could relate to and probably a lot of other people can understand<\/strong>, <strong>even though it\u2019s set on a non-specified German island in a past that isn\u2019t fully defined\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI always wanted to make it a bit of a parable. I wanted it to have this universal quality. The historic setting and the island, and all of these\u00a0decisions\u00a0were made\u00a0because I wanted it to\u00a0feel\u00a0like a universal fairy tale, in a sense. For me, it was important not to pinpoint an exact time and location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe [COVID] pandemic actually helped a lot\u00a0with the writing.\u00a0During that time, I stayed at\u00a0my parents\u2019 place. They live in a small farmer\u2019s village now. The island in the film is, in a way, at the end of the world. It\u2019s somewhat otherworldly.\u00a0I\u00a0also wanted the community to be very reclusive and close-knit, so I\u00a0introduced\u00a0the island in the script very early on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Did you actually shoot on an island?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tYes, we shot on\u00a0actual islands, two different German islands, Sylt and Norderney.\u00a0But when you see the island in a wide shot in the beginning, that is a VFX shot, because the islands themselves are much bigger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Tell me a bit about your cast and how you found Hein and the other characters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI had amazing casting directors, Liza Stutzky and Andrea Rodr\u00edguez. Paul Boche\u00a0is fantastic\u00a0as Hein and really gave his all to\u00a0the role.\u00a0Some of the cast members are also\u00a0quite well known\u00a0in Germany, including Emilia Sch\u00fcle, Jeanette Hain, and Sebastian Blomberg. People loved the script from the start and\u00a0could see the potential of the film,\u00a0so we were very fortunate that everyone wanted to be part of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Was it just me, or did you write in old or at least old-sounding language?<br \/><\/strong><br \/>Yes, the film\u00a0features\u00a0historic language and a theater-like setting, which is not easy for an actor to\u00a0portray convincingly. They all did an amazing job, and with the language and setting, you can fully immerse yourself in the story and truly feel what the characters are feeling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Since you mention the theater-type setting, I loved that you used houses, which have walls missing. How did you make that decision or how did that come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tActually,\u00a0this idea came out of budgetary constraints. We didn\u2019t have the money to build an entire village. The village court was always planned as an amphitheater,\u00a0so I thought: since I wanted the story to be a parable,\u00a0how could we push this even further? I was inspired by\u00a0<em>Dogville<\/em>\u00a0by Lars von Trier, one of the films I deeply admire. It\u2019s like you\u2019re always on a stage, you\u2019re always performing.\u00a0But what was especially important for me in this approach\u00a0was that we don\u2019t lose the connection to Hein, so you can fully immerse yourself in the story.\u00a0I tried to counter any sense of\u00a0distance with the cinematography, staying really close to Hein using a handheld camera, in a kind of documentary style.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>The people on the island play this card <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> called \u201cL\u00fcgen\u201d (Bullshit). Is that a real game?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt is an actual game, but it has different names in different regions. It is actually called L\u00fcgen where I come from. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Memories differ between the island inhabitants and Hein. Tell me a bit about this theme of different narratives in people\u2019s heads!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhen I talked to people about\u00a0my experience growing up queer,\u00a0even my family or close friends, and shared what I went through or struggled with in childhood, they were often surprised. They didn\u2019t know.\u00a0Then I realized\u00a0that I had kept it all inside; I hadn\u2019t really shown it on the outside. That tension fascinated me: what is the value of a memory if it\u2019s only based on external observation?\u00a0My experience was so different from what everyone else thought I had experienced, and for them, the memory would be completely different. That tension is what the idea of the court is based on. And very often, in the process of making this film, I felt like maybe I was\u00a0a bit\u00a0too late\u00a0with this story. And then suddenly, now that the film is done, things in the world are kind of reversed, and it\u2019s feeling so timely again. I was surprised by that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>I hope we will see more feature films from you. Any new ideas or plans?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI hope so\u00a0too. Filmmaking\u00a0has been my dream\u00a0since I was 12 years old. I used to shoot homemade versions of my favorite films with my classmates.\u00a0Some of them are even coming to the premiere at Berlinale. It\u2019s a full-circle moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSo yes, I hope to make more films, but I\u2019m really grateful and happy that we have this opportunity now to show this film at the Berlinale in Perspectives.
