Elon Musk is \u201cactively\u201d working to make xAI\u2019s Grok chatbot \u201cmore unhinged,\u201d according to a former employee who spoke to The Verge<\/a> about recent departures from Musk\u2019s AI company.<\/p>\n

This week, following the announcement that Musk\u2019s SpaceX is acquiring xAI (which previously acquired his social media<\/a> company X), at least 11 engineers and two co-founders said they\u2019re leaving the company. Some said they\u2019re departing to start something new, and Musk himself suggested this is part of an effort to organize xAI more effectively.<\/p>\n

But two sources who left the company (at least one of them before the current wave) reportedly told The Verge that employees have become increasingly disillusioned by the company\u2019s disregard for safety, resulting in global scrutiny after Grok was used to create more than 1 million sexualized images<\/a>, including deepfakes of real women and minors.<\/p>\n

One source said, \u201cSafety is a dead org at xAI,\u201d while the other said that Musk is \u201cactively is trying to make the model more unhinged because safety means censorship, in a sense, to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

They also reportedly complained about a lack of direction, with one saying they felt xAI was \u201cstuck in the catch-up phase\u201d compared to competitors.<\/p>\n
