\n Public Advocate Jumaane Williams rolled out a vision last week he calls \u201cRedefining Public Safety\u201d \u2014 an earnest effort to flesh out what the less-extreme de-policing advocates want. But the better name is \u201cEliminating Public Safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople want to feel safe. Very often the thing that\u2019s offered is simply more policing,\u201d Williams lamented last week. \u201cThat\u2019s a narrative that needs to change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Huh? Through Sept. 6, the number of people shot is nearly double last year\u2019s figure (1,288 vs. 653). Many survived, thank goodness, but homicides are still up 35 percent from 2019. Burglaries are up 41\u2009percent; auto thefts, 61 percent.<\/p>\n

And the quality of life in the city, with vagrants and druggies terrorizing communities, is the worst in decades \u2014 a key reason people are fleeing.<\/p>\n

Yet Williams wants less policing.<\/p>\n

Not all his views are entirely off-base. It would be great if someone other than cops could handle crises of people with mental-health issues. Police aren\u2019t mental-health experts or social<\/a> workers, and don\u2019t want to be.<\/p>\n

He calls for \u201cstrengthening\u201d the \u201ccommunity-based mental-health infrastructure,\u201d which sounds fine (but no Thrive, please). Yet he also wants to \u201cminimize\u201d hospitalization, when it\u2019s clear that more, not less, of the severely mentally ill should be in hospitals \u2014 the city\u2019s shortage of psychiatric beds is a problem.<\/p>\n

More important: His other alternatives to policing are downright absurd \u2014 exposing the hollowness of the entire de-policing app<\/a>roach. To Williams, for instance, gun violence isn\u2019t a criminal matter; it\u2019s a \u201cpublic-health crisis.\u201d To address it, he\u2019d deploy \u201ccredible messengers,\u201d \u201ccommunity groups\u201d and \u201cviolence interrupters.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019d also make housing a \u201chuman right\u201d (never mind supply) and \u201cquestion\u201d the city\u2019s \u201cover-reliance\u201d on law enforcement in the subways. Feel safer yet?<\/p>\n

In fact, more policing was the key to reining in violence during the pre-Giuliani bad old days. Two Democrats \u2014 Mayor David Dinkins and City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr. \u2014 added 5,000 cops to the force after murders peaked at 2,262 in 1990; Mayor Rudy Giuliani added thousands more. Upshot: Before the 2020 spike, murders since then fell 86 percent.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Williams has spent much of his political life pushing for \u201creforms\u201d (the rollback of broken windows policing, the emptying of jails, etc.) that have fueled the current wave of violence.<\/p>\n

Ironically, he claims he\u2019s looking out for minorities, yet they\u2019re the biggest victims of his ideas. And they know it: For example, 80 percent of American blacks want more police in their areas, or at least as much as they have now, a recent Gallup poll showed. So do 83 percent of Hispanics.<\/p>\n

Yes, many blacks and Hispanics want changes in policing and the criminal-justice system \u2014 but \u201cde-policing\u201d is just a bid to pawn off lefty fantasies as real answers.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
