\n An Iowa City teacher has been placed on leave for assigning students to \u201cpretend you are a black slave.\u201d<\/p>\n

The controversial assignment asked\u00a0students to pretend they were enslaved and asked what they would do if they were freed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThink very, very carefully about what your life would be like as a slave in 1865. You can\u2019t read or write and you have never been off the plantation you work on. What would you do when you hear the news<\/a> you are free? What factors would play into the decision you make?\u201d the assignment read, according to the Iowa City Press Citizen.<\/a><\/p>\n

One high school parent said her daughter was so upset about the assignment she couldn\u2019t bring herself to complete it.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s, like, \u2018Mom, that makes me so uncomfortable.\u2019 She just starts tearing up. And I was, like, \u2018No, listen, you don\u2019t have to be ashamed of who you are.\u2019 I said, \u2018You are beautiful for who you are. Don\u2019t let not one soul make you uncomfortable for who you are,’\u201d Dibny Game<\/a>z, mother to 14-year-old daughter, Ayesha, told the paper:<\/p>\n

Gamez said there are other ways to teach children about race, adding: \u00a0\u201cThe way it is in 2020 right now, when it comes to race, you have to be very careful of what you can say and not say.\u201d<\/p>\n

The assignment has been removed and the teacher, part of the district\u2019s online learning program, was placed on leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe assignment was inapp<\/a>ropriate\u201d and the district \u201cdoes not support and will not tolerate this type of instruction,\u201d Iowa City Community School District spokesperson Kristin Pedersen told the Press Citizen.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
