{"id":713657,"date":"2026-02-26T05:15:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T02:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/scrubs-returns-to-sacred-heart-older-and-a-little-bit-wiser\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T05:15:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T02:15:13","slug":"scrubs-returns-to-sacred-heart-older-and-a-little-bit-wiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/scrubs-returns-to-sacred-heart-older-and-a-little-bit-wiser\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Scrubs\u2019 Returns to Sacred Heart, Older and (a Little Bit) Wiser"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>[This story contains spoilers for the first two episodes of the <em>Scrubs<\/em> revival on ABC.]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s been almost 25 years since <em>Scrubs<\/em> aired its first episode, and the revival of the hospital comedy that premiered on ABC Wednesday is upfront about acknowledging the passage of that much time. JD (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) are all older and more experienced, and their relationships have changed \u2014 fractured, in some cases. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhere they were interns when the show began, the returning characters are now teachers. Turk is chief of surgery at Sacred Heart Hospital, and JD returns as chief of medicine in Wednesday\u2019s premiere. Elliot also has a senior position at the hospital. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut it\u2019s still <em>Scrubs<\/em>, which means the show still features JD\u2019s voice-over narration and cuts to his daydreams, and Turk still dances down the hallway, and Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) delivers a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of rapid-fire putdowns aimed at an intern. Oh, and JD and Turk, upon seeing one another again, still do their \u201cEagle\u201d bit \u2014\u00a0only to have it collapse because Turk\u2019s sciatica is acting up. Again, time has passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWhen we were discussing what the initial thing would be, you could still have that silliness, because that\u2019s real and true to life for Donald and I,\u201d Braff told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cBut then, if we\u2019re keeping it grounded in reality, how do we show that these men are the chief of surgery and the chief of medicine at a teaching hospital where they need to be incredible teachers? I was interested in that \u2014 the mix of being funny with your friend but also being able to pivot to being a wonderful teacher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOne other possibly sobering fact: JD and Elliot, who ended the show\u2019s eighth season as a couple after years of an on-and-off relationship (the new show more or less skips the med school-focused, semi-spinoff ninth season of the original series), are now divorces. Showrunner Aseem Batra said that idea became fodder for several \u201cfun debates\u201d in the writers room \u2014 including convincing series creator Bill Lawrence that it was the right move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHe did not like that initially. He was like, \u2018But it\u2019s JD and Elliot,\u2019\u201d Batra said of Lawrence\u2019s initial reaction. \u201cBut after thinking about it for a beat, he\u2019s like, \u2018Yeah, you\u2019re right. We were going to get a lot more story out of them not being together.\u2019 It also tracks with how we saw them in the first iteration of <em>Scrubs<\/em>, where they were kind of all over the place with each other. It also tracks just with the authenticity of life and how things turn out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBraff and Chalke were on board with the idea as well, noting that the conflict in their relationship throughout the show\u2019s original run brought out some of their best work. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to lose that, because Sarah and I love playing off of each other,\u201d Braff said. \u201c[JD and Elliot] just being fine, I think would be boring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cTotally,\u201d Chalke added. \u201cAnd then it gives the opportunity for them to [explore] what is that like for them to co-parent, and what is it like for them to end up working together in the same hospital again, and what about when they start dating? How does the other person feel about that? Reyes, who\u2019s a regular on another ABC series, <em>High Potential<\/em>, has a recurring role on <em>Scrubs<\/em> and will in a handful of the season\u2019s episodes. The show\u2019s other returning core cast member, McGinley, may not, as Dr. Cox tells JD he\u2019s retiring and passes the chief of medicine job onto him (to the great dismay of Joel Kim Booster\u2019s Dr. Eric Park, who seemed to be in line for the position). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Scrubs<\/em> filmed its first eight seasons at a decommissioned hospital in the San Fernando Valley. That building was torn down in 2011, and the new season was filmed on soundstages in Vancouver \u2014 but with precise re-creations of the old sets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201c[Production designer] Cabot McMullen took all his blueprints and shipped them up to Vancouver, and on a 20,000-square-foot stage, which is very large, they reconstructed it down to the texture of the paint and the tile, the feel and look of the hospital,\u201d said McGinley. \u201cIt was remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tReyes said it was almost \u201ceerie\u201d how well new the new sets matched the former ones, to the point where she would get lost on the sets thinking they were laid out similarly to the original setup. \u201cIt was eerie once you\u2019re in the space, but it puts everything in context for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLawrence is an executive producer of the revival, but he wasn\u2019t the showrunner due to contractual matters: He has an overall deal with Warner Bros. TV \u2014\u00a0and several other ongoing series, including <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le TV\u2019s <em>Shrinking<\/em> and <em>Ted Lasso<\/em> and HBO\u2019s upcoming <em>Rooster<\/em> \u2014 and <em>Scrubs<\/em> is produced by Disney\u2019s 20th Television. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not a huge therapy guy, but I talked to a therapist [about] how it\u2019s making me crazy that I can\u2019t micromanage and control every aspect of it,\u201d Lawrence told <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cBut that\u2019s not what this is. There are original writers [working on this version] who knew me when I was a kid and doing that, so I feel safe. But they\u2019re also nice enough to let me participate. I really worked hard on the pilot, and I\u2019ve been working with Zach on a lot of the cuts, and it makes me very joyful to see what this stuff has become.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tStill, Lawrence jokes that \u201cIf I didn\u2019t have other shows going on, I\u2019m quite sure I would have been wearing a <em>Mission: Impossible<\/em> mask and trying to work on the show without getting caught.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBatra\u2019s first job as a TV writer was on <em>Scrubs<\/em> (she also played an intern in a few episodes), and she said it\u2019s \u201csurreal\u201d to return as showrunner on the revival. \u201cIf I thought about it too hard, I would probably have a panic attack and not be able to do it. So we just launched into it,\u201d she told THR. \u201cAnd you realize that all those hours of TV make a difference, and then when you step into it, you\u2019re ready to go. That doesn\u2019t mean there aren\u2019t challenges, but I think there\u2019s a readiness. I\u2019m glad that we\u2019re doing this now and not like five years ago.
