CONTRAIL<\/strong>, the animation planning and production studio formed in 2019 to produce full-length movies<\/a> directed by In This Corner of the World<\/em>\/Black Lagoon<\/em>\u2018s Sunao Katabuchi<\/strong>, will be folded into MAPP<\/a>A<\/strong>. It was originally an affiliated company of MAPPA\u2018s, with the latter\u2019s president serving as CONTRAIL\u2019s representative director.<\/span><\/p>\n

The news<\/a> was first reported by Gamebiz<\/a>, citing the kanpo<\/em> (Official Gazette). According to a shared image of the gazette, MAPPA will take on CONTRAIL\u2019s rights and obligations, and the latter company will be dissolved. <\/span><\/p>\n

After the report was published, Katabuchi said on X\/Twitter<\/a> that while CONTRAIL will no longer be independently managed, it won\u2019t be shuttered. He added that the CONTRAIL name will continue to exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

The studio is currently producing Katabuchi\u2018s The Mourning Children: Nagiko and The Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black<\/em>, a historical film set in Heian era Kyoto, a time when \u201cthe city was shrouded in darkness due to repeated epidemics of plague.\u201d The movie was announced in 2023, while preparations started as early as 2017. 2025 saw the release of a \u201cNew Edition\u201d of a previously revealed pilot, as well as The Mourning Children<\/em>\u2018s appearance at Annecy as a Work in Progress title.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CONTRAIL has also been involved in a number of short-form animation projects over the years, including the \u201cLucky\u201d music video for the Pok\u00e9mon Music Collective project, the ending animation for Attack of Titan The Final Season<\/em> Part 2, the animated cutscenes for Emio \u2013 The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club<\/em>, and the Kikasete hoshii: Kimi no Koto\u00a0<\/em>short film.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

CONTRAIL\u2019s first credit, according to its website, was for providing production assistance on 2019\u2019s In This Corner (And Other Corners) Of The World<\/em>, an extended version of In This Corner Of The World<\/em>. In This Corner Of The World\u00a0<\/em>was produced by MAPPA, and was also the reason for MAPPA\u2019s establishment.<\/span><\/p>\n
