\n The young boy who went missing after falling into the Harlem River Saturday afternoon has been identified as 5-year-old Brendan Mitchell, according to police sources.<\/p>\n

Mitchell was last seen by his brother falling from a tree and into the water shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Randall\u2019s Island, and was seen floating away and going under \u2014 and remains missing despite attempts by relatives and authorities to find him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday they said they were looking for a kid,\u201d a jogger who would only give his name as Stan said Sunday. \u201cToday it looks like they\u2019re searching for a body, pushing that stick into the mud like that. It\u2019s godawful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The missing boy was with his family near the water at Harlem River Field 7 when he tumbled into the water, sources said.<\/p>\n

Witnesses said Mitchell\u2019s parents and other adults jumped into the river to rescue the boy, but were unable to locate the youngster in the murky waters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw a little arm out of the water, that was it,\u201d Luis Ramos, who was coaching soccer nearby, told The Post Saturday. \u201cThe last thing I saw was an arm sticking out.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday, an NYPD patrol boat continued to search the water for the boy\u2019s body. Two cops \u2014 one holding a six-foot-long pole, were walking along the water line on the Bronx since of the river while firefighters scanned the surface with binoculars.<\/p>\n

Shortly before noon, police divers went into the water.<\/p>\n

Resident Edwin Flores said he was taking photographs nearby when he saw the child\u2019s parents come out of the water after trying to rescue the boy.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom there you could see the women,\u201d Flores said in Spanish. \u201cThey were wet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two jumped into the water,\u201d he added. \u201cQuickly. The child disapp<\/a>eared one-two-three. That\u2019s what they told me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flores said he talked photos in the area almost every day, and said the river\u2019s current was strong and the tide was high when the incident occurred.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
