\n\tJohn Oliver isn\u2019t what you might say thrilled<\/em> about getting a new \u201cbusiness daddy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s how he\u2019s referred to whatever company happ<\/a>ens to own HBO, home of his late-night show Last Week Tonight, <\/em>over the years, from AT&T to Warner Bros. Discovery. On Sunday\u2019s episode, he referenced last week\u2019s news<\/a> that Netflix had backed out of the bidding for Warner Bros., positioning David Ellison\u2019s Paramount Skydance to win the battle for the studio.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt turns out we might be getting a new business daddy,\u201d he said, before showing a news clip recapping recent events. \u201cYeah, not great<\/em> news. In fact, if I may quote anyone who\u2019s ever accidentally sat on their Roku remote, \u2018Oh shit, I\u2019m in Paramount now, how the fuck do I get out of this?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Thursday,\u00a0Netflix\u00a0said it was declining to raise its bid for Warner Bros. Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters released a statement saying that the deal is \u201cno longer financially attractive\u201d and that it \u201cwas always a \u2018nice to have\u2019 at the right price, not a \u2018must have\u2019 at any price.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe transaction we negotiated would have created shareholder value with a clear path to regulatory approval,\u201d they said in a joint statement. \u201cHowever, we\u2019ve always been disciplined, and at the price required to match Paramount Skydance\u2019s latest offer, the deal is no longer financially attractive, so we are declining to match the Paramount Skydance bid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFor his part, Oliver has never shied away from poking fun at whatever parent company owns HBO. He frequently criticized previous owner AT&T, mocking what he called its\u00a0\u201cterrible\u201d service.\u00a0He also took jabs at AT&T during a\u00a0segment about robocalls\u00a0and went on a rant over the company\u2019s\u00a0support of \u201cwhite nationalist\u201d Steve King.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd in 2022, when Discovery and WarnerMedia<\/a> combined to create Warner Bros. Discovery, and days after AT&T was no longer HBO\u2019s owner, Oliver said on his show: \u201cInterestingly, as of Friday, AT&T officially no longer owns us, so it is goodbye from me, Business Daddy. Let me just say this,\u201d he added, giving two middle fingers, \u201cwhich is frankly two more bars than you have ever had,\u201d he said, referring to the provider\u2019s cell phone coverage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
