\n Jimmy Kimmel will wear a tux and deliver an opening monologue \u2014 but those are about the only \u201cnormal\u201d parts of Sunday night\u2019s 2020 Emmys.<\/p>\n

Forget the traditional pre-shindig red-carpet ceremony (\u201cWho are you wearing?\u201d), the star-studded studio audience dressed to the nines, the oft-cringeworthy presenter exchanges and even that jacked-up, booming voice-over guy.<\/p>\n

In the COVID era, it will be just Kimmel, joking with and talking to the nominees, and a worldwide audience, live from the Staples Center in LA.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo some extent we\u2019re leaning into the unpredictability of [the ceremony] because, as Jimmy says, we have no idea what\u2019s going to happ<\/a>en \u2014 and that\u2019s part of the fun,\u201d said Guy Carrington, who\u2019s executive-producing the telecast along with Kimmel, Reginald Hudlin, Ian Stewart and David Jammy. \u201cWe\u2019ll be prepared for pretty much any eventuality, but there will be something we\u2019re not expecting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will go off in a direction we\u2019ll least expect,\u201d he told The Post. \u201cIt\u2019s given me a few sleepless nights, but people will be talking about it the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrington said Kimmel will open the telecast (8 to 11 p.m. on ABC) with a monologue (of some sort \u2014 it\u2019s still being written). \u201cHe\u2019ll be able to see, hear, talk to and interact with all the nominees from across the world beamed onto his set,\u201d Carrington said. \u201cA lot of the work we\u2019ve been doing over the last few months is about facilitating all those 140 feeds coming into the Staples Center and working with the nominees and their representatives to make sure it\u2019s a good connection \u2014 well-framed and nicely lit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe [telecast] should still feel like it has some gravitas, since it\u2019s the biggest night of the year for the TV industry,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want the ceremony to feel like a video conference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrington said the \u201cmajority\u201d of nominees were sent lighting and audio-enhanced equipment in advance. \u201cThey all have screens that will allow us to talk to them and have a two-way conversation,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the other things we\u2019re dealing with is that the show goes out on a small, five-second delay, so we need to make sure the feed they\u2019re watching is our feed, so they can watch in real-time and interact with their fellow nominees.\u201d<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s another big difference from the traditional Emmycast: no dress code, which could lead to some, well, interesting<\/em> attire.<\/p>\n

\u2018If they want to be sitting in a pool on an inflatable pineapple, that\u2019s great.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIn some ways the formality has been removed from [the telecast], which lends itself to a really fun show,\u201d Carrington said. \u201cYou\u2019ll see the nominees in their homes, and we\u2019ve encouraged them to have fun with what they\u2019re doing .\u2009.\u2009. to be with their families and kids. We love that idea .\u2009.\u2009. of having that interaction with the nominees that no one has ever seen before.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt lends a certain level of intrigue to the audience,\u201d he said. \u201cWho are they going to be with? Are they going to get dressed up? If they\u2019re in London, and it\u2019s 3 a.m. there, maybe they\u2019ll be in their pajamas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they want to be sitting in a pool on an inflatable pineapple, that\u2019s great. Let\u2019s have fun with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrington said the winning nominees were not informed ahead of time; even the producers (including Kimmel) don\u2019t know who will emerge victorious. \u201cThis is my third year [producing] the show, and that level of secrecy is the way it should be,\u201d he said. \u201cNobody will know until the envelope is opened; in some cases, the nominees can\u2019t be with us live, so they\u2019ve prerecorded their segments, but no one knows who they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel will be joined Sunday night by a few (social<\/a>ly distanced) presenters in hazmat suits on the Staples Center stage, Carrington said, but there will be no in-house orchestra to play the usual musical flourishes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve spent a lot of time on .\u2009.\u2009. what we can do to enhance the atmosphere,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will have [pre-recorded] musical accompanime<\/a>nt and scoring for large pieces of the show. It needs some energy \u2014 it\u2019s a three-hour show, and [the music] will really help to get things moving.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make a show that\u2019s true to the Emmys but that reflects where we are and not being tone-deaf to that,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re very mindful of that.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
