Variety has reported that a live-action adaptation of the <\/span>Samurai Champloo<\/span><\/i> historical samurai TV anime<\/a> series<\/a> is in development from <\/span>Tomorrow Studios<\/b>, with original director <\/span>Shinichiro Watanabe <\/b>being attached to the project in an undisclosed role.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to Variety, the live-action project is still in its early development stages and has not yet been pitched to other networks. It is reported to \u201cretain [its] core elements\u201d and will \u201c[update] the material for a contemporary television audience.\u201d <\/span>Becky Clements<\/b>, a producer and Partner\/President of Tomorrow Studios, adds that music will be an important aspect of the live-action adaptation and plans on bringing \u201ca major recording artist\u201d to \u201cestablish the show\u2019s sound.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tomorrow Studios has been involved in the co-production of Netflix\u2019s live-action <\/span>One Piece <\/span><\/i>TV series, with the recent eight-episode second season being released on the streaming service on March 10, 2026. The first season was released on August 31, 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The short-lived <\/span>Cowboy Bebop<\/span><\/i> live-action series, which was also released on Netflix in November 2021, was another co-production of Tomorrow Studios, with <\/span>Midnight Radio<\/b>, <\/span>Sunrise<\/b>, and <\/span>ITV Studios<\/b>. It ran for a total of 10 episodes.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Samurai Champloo<\/span><\/i> was directed by Watanabe at the now-defunct animation studio <\/span>Manglobe<\/b>. It was released in Japan from May 20, 2004 to March 19, 2005 and ran for 26 episodes.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Funimation previously licensed <\/span>Samurai Champloo<\/span><\/i> for English release in 2009. The anime series is now streaming on Crunchyroll, which describes its main premise as:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mugen is a ferocious, animalistic warrior with a fighting style inspired by break-dancing. Jin is a ronin samurai who wanders the countryside alone. They may not be friends, but their paths continually cross. And when ditzy waitress Fuu gets them out of hot water with the local magistrate, they agree to join her search for the samurai who smells like sunflowers.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n
