Its user agreement states that users retain ownership.<\/li>\n<li>Reddit holds only a non-exclusive license to user posts.<\/li>\n<li>The snippets cited in the complaint (e.g., dates, addresses, short fragments) aren\u2019t copyrightable.<\/li>\n<li>SerpApi accessed Google Search pages, not Reddit itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DMCA.<\/strong> Khaleghy said Reddit claims SerpApi violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by circumventing technical protections. SerpApi disputes that claim, saying it retrieves the same search results visible to anyone who enters a query in Google. Khaleghy argued that:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SerpApi doesn\u2019t break encryption or bypass authentication.<\/li>\n<li>Accessing public webpages isn\u2019t \u201ccircumvention\u201d under the DMCA.<\/li>\n<li>Reddit is trying to enforce copyright protections it doesn\u2019t own.<\/li>\n<li>Reddit\u2019s privacy policy states that public posts may <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear in search results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Catch up quick.<\/strong> Legal fights over search scraping and AI data have intensified in recent months:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Oct. 22:<\/strong> Reddit sued SerpApi, Perplexity, Oxylabs, and AWMProxy, alleging they scraped Reddit content through Google Search and reused it at scale. Reddit said it planted a \u201ctrap\u201d post visible only to Google\u2019s crawler that later appeared in Perplexity responses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oct. 29:<\/strong> SerpApi said it would fight the lawsuit, calling the allegations inflammatory and defending access to public search data.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dec. 19:<\/strong> Google sued SerpApi, alleging the company bypassed bot protections and scraped licensed search features.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feb. 23:<\/strong> SerpApi asked a federal court to dismiss Google\u2019s lawsuit, arguing Google is misusing the DMCA to restrict access to public search results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> The case tests whether companies can extract information from Google\u2019s search results without violating copyright or the DMCA. The outcome could affect SEO tools and AI training data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next.<\/strong> The court must decide whether Reddit\u2019s amended complaint can proceed.
