This makes it very difficult to respond as a brand, even when you have something to say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But trending topics aren\u2019t always short-lived. In fact, some are absolutely worth building content around if you identify the right kind of topic at the right time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To explore this further, we at Fractl partnered up with Exploding Topics to unveil the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/explodingtopics.com\/trends-average-lifespan\"><span>average lifespan of trends<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here\u2019s what we found and how you can use these insights to amplify your content marketing strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Understanding_longer-term_trending_topics\"><\/span><span>Understanding longer-term trending topics<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Just because something\u2019s trending doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019ll only be around for days. That\u2019s certainly the case for many topics, but there are also plenty of topics that gain enough steam to last them for long enough to be worthy of earning a place in your <\/span><span>content calendar<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1318780 lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"306\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-2020-09-18-at-14.00.54.png\" data-lazy=\"true\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-2020-09-18-at-14.00.54.png 629w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-2020-09-18-at-14.00.54-280x136.png 280w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-2020-09-18-at-14.00.54-540x263.png 540w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-2020-09-18-at-14.00.54-270x131.png 270w\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span>That\u2019s one of our major findings: when we looked at all of the topics on the Exploding Topics platform (which features trending topics and tracks when they\u2019re at their most popular and when they\u2019re peaking), we found they last for <\/span><i><span>years<\/span><\/i><span> on average.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some examples of potentially longer-term trends (currently <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing on Exploding Topics) are \u201cnano influencers,\u201d \u201cgaslighting,\u201d and \u201csquat proof leggings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The concept of longer-term trends shines an entirely different perspective on the concept of trends \u2014 one that can be extremely valuable from a marketing perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Imagine being able to identify a trend relevant to your industry, building a high-quality piece of content about it, becoming an authority for it, ranking for it, and leveraging the engagement and organic traffic you get for years?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here\u2019s how you can try executing this strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Deciding_your_brands_contribution_to_the_trending_topic\"><\/span><span>Deciding your brand\u2019s contribution to the trending topic<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>When you\u2019ve identified a topic that\u2019s trending in your industry and relevant to your brand, it\u2019s time to decide what you\u2019ll say and how you\u2019ll say it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are four important questions to consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>What intent related to that topic do you want to fulfill?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>What has already been published (so your content isn\u2019t repetitive)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>What can your brand uniquely add to the conversation?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>What audience are you targeting, and how will you reach them?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>To illustrate these considerations and different ways you address them, let\u2019s use an example I called out above: nano influencers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In this hypothetical, let\u2019s say you work at a digital marketing company that has many services, including <\/span><span>influencer marketing<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Identifying_intent\"><\/span><span>Identifying intent<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Since this is hypothetically a service you offer, it could make sense to go more bottom-of-the-funnel; maybe you\u2019d create <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.frac.tl\/on-site-content-examples\"><span>on-site content<\/span><\/a><span> to explain the marketing impact of the nano influencer strategy, which you can speak to with real examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But if you\u2019re not sure which intent makes sense, you can solidify intent once you answer the second question\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Seeing_what_content_is_out_there\"><\/span><span>Seeing what content is out there<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>The first and easiest way to do that is to examine the search engine result pages (SERPs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In this case, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=nano+influencers&amp;oq=nano+influencers\"><span>the SERP<\/span><\/a><span> is loaded with paid ads of other companies trying to sell nano influencer services, so you may want to go another route.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other interesting insights? The New York Times wrote about the trend at the end of 2018, and there\u2019s been plenty of time since to cover the basics of defining what the term means and how to find nano influencers for your own brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are also many definition-related images ranking, so that\u2019s pretty much covered, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While something being published doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t try to do a better job, it\u2019s still good to know how you can bring something completely fresh and original to the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Determining_what_you_uniquely_offer\"><\/span><span>Determining what you uniquely offer<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Staying with this example, from my quick examination, I\u2019d say case studies of how working with nano influencers can impact your brand would be a great way to go. Why? Well, a company that offers the service would probably be able to tell that story best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Additionally, there appears to be a need for it; on a more specific search term\u2019s SERP (<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=brands+looking+for+nano+influencers\"><span>brands looking for nano influencers<\/span><\/a><span>), one of the top results is from the perspective of someone looking to <\/span><i><span>become<\/span><\/i><span> a nano influencer, not <\/span><i><span>work<\/span><\/i><span> with one. That signals the need for more great content that matches this specific query.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reaching_your_target_audience\"><\/span><span>Reaching your target audience<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Because of the route we took in this example, ranking in the SERPs is one of the main promotional angles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But it\u2019s always important to consider how else you can reach your target audience. If it\u2019s bottom-of-the-funnel, maybe you could feature the case study results on your contact page or include it in various blog posts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Perhaps it\u2019s something you can send out to your email list or share on your social channels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Consider where this particular audience persona is and plan how you\u2019ll reach them now and over time. Remember: these types of trends don\u2019t quickly dissipate. You can distribute this content over month-long periods if appropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span><span>Conclusion<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>We just looked at one example, but there are countless ways long-term trending topics can become a crucial aspect of your content plan. With \u201cgaslighting,\u201d maybe it\u2019s writing a thought leadership piece for an off-site publisher to build authority. For \u201csquat proof leggings,\u201d maybe it\u2019s adding more description to your product pages and featuring those types of leggings on your category page for a time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whatever the trend is, consider those four questions to determine how your brand can positively contribute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Building a brand?
