Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg spoke out against the use of AI technology<\/a> when used in creative endeavors in an interview at the SXSW conference in Austin on Friday. Asked how he viewed AI\u2019s utility as part of the filmmaking process, Spielberg said, \u201cI\u2019ve never used AI on any of my films yet,\u201d to which the audience erupted with cheers and app<\/a>lause. <\/p>\n

The director\/producer\/screenwriter, who became a household name for blockbusters like \u201cJaws,\u201d \u201cE.T.,\u201d \u201cClose Encounters of the Third Kind,\u201d \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark,\u201d and many others, is not anti-technology, necessarily. His own films have imagined worlds filled with technology, for both good and bad, like \u201cMinority Report,\u201d \u201cReady Player One,\u201d and, of course, \u201cA.I. Artificial Intelligence,\u201d to name a few. <\/p>\n

At SXSW 2026, Spielberg said he didn\u2019t want to go on a rant about AI, noting that he was for the technology \u201cin many disciplines,\u201d but in his writers\u2019 rooms, even in TV, \u201cthere\u2019s not an empty chair with a laptop in front of it.\u201d Meaning, he\u2019s not outsourcing creativity to the machine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not for AI if it replaces a creative individual,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Of course, someone like Spielberg may not need an AI assist. AI startups are pitching themselves to resource-constrained indie filmmakers. Elsewhere, big names in streaming are also looking to use AI. Amazon this year said it\u2019s testing tools for AI in film and TV production, and Netflix earlier this month acquired Ben Affleck\u2019s AI filmmaking company for a reported $600 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
