\n\tAmy Madigan officially became the 2026 Oscar\u2019s secret weapon of Zach Cregger\u2019s Weapons<\/em> by picking up the best supporting actress trophy for her work in the film.<\/p>\n

\n\tMadigan, 75, set a new record with the win because it made her the actress with the longest gap (40 years and one month) between a first nomination and a first victory. She received her first nod for 1985\u2019s Twice in a Lifetime<\/em>, a Bud Yorkin-directed film that also starred Gene Hackman, Ann-Margret and Ellen Burstyn. The previous record holder amongst actresses was Geraldine Page who won for The Trip<\/a> To Bountiful<\/em> at the 1986 Oscars. It came 32 years and one month after her first nomination for Hondo<\/em> at the 1954 Oscars. <\/p>\n

\n\tLast year\u2019s best supporting actress winner Zoe Salda\u00f1a had the honor of presenting the trophy, the first Oscar doled out during the show, and when she read Madigan\u2019s name, the starry crowd responded with a standing ovation. Madigan noted how they were advised not to rattle off a list of names \u201cbecause nobody knows who the hell those people are,\u201d but she leaned in because it\u2019s people \u201cthat mean something to you that you couldn\u2019t be here without them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn that note, she thanked Cregger for \u201cwriting me a dream part\u201d and letting her \u201cgrab it by the throat and we had a ball.\u201d She also shouted out Warner Bros. chiefs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca as well as Newline. Madigan then turned her attention to her fellow nominees in the category, Sentimental Value\u2019s<\/em> Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Sinners<\/em> Wunmi Mosaku and One Battle After Another\u2019s<\/em> Teyana Taylor.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I was doing all the Weapons<\/em> stuff, I was kind of traveling on my own and people from One Battle<\/em> and people from Sinners<\/em> and all the films, they just kind of gave me a hug and said, \u2018Yeah, come on in and let us know you. You can know us.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMadigan closed her heartfelt speech by thanking her daughter, Lily, and her daughter\u2019s husband, Sean, \u201cand, of course, all the dogs.\u201d Then came the \u201cmost important\u201d by a leap, her husband, Oscar nominated actor Ed Harris. \u201cEd has been with me forever, and that\u2019s a long ass time. And none of this would mean anything if he wasn\u2019t by my side.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tIn Cregger\u2019s Weapons<\/em>, Madigan stars as Aunt Gladys. The plot traces the fallout of what happ<\/a>ens when 17 third-grade children disappear from their homes in the middle of the night at the exact same time. The film\u2019s final act reveals that the aunt of one of the school children is a witch and cast a spell to help keep herself alive amid an illness. Madigan\u2019s Gladys became something of an online and cultural sensation thanks to her smeared clown-like makeup, an unmistakable wig and menacing presence. It brought renewed interest to her career, too.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was telling everybody, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m going to play this really wild lady,\u2019 \u201d she told The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s <\/em>David Canfield late last year. \u201cThen it came out, and it turned into something else. It feels very antithetical to the work that I do and how I live my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking of that work, it\u2019s been reported that Cregger had a prequel in mind for Weapons<\/em>, centered on Aunt Gladys and how she got to be the mysterious villain of his story. \u201cZach has a map of what he would like to do. But as we know about this business \u2014 until it\u2019s real, it\u2019s not real,\u201d Madigan said last year. \u201cIt would be such a blast, and it would be really great if we could revisit her in some way. I\u2019m excited about that possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n
