It\u2019s a fitting look for the musical superhero, who parlayed his early bass-prodigy status into a two-decade-plus career as an artist and collaborator for music\u2019s best and brightest. Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, Kendrick Lamar, and the late great Mac Miller, have all been close friends and collaborators. Plus, Thundercat has a few notable musical sparring partners \u2014 like Tame Impala, and Lil Yachty \u2014 as featured guests on his newest album, <i>Distracted<\/i>, out April 3.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-278655\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            The project is a characteristically virtuosic, jazzy set of songs that, per its title, explores the frenetic nature of online life. \u201cNowadays, it sucks,\u201d he says grimly, briefly pausing his jolly hum.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            His <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> commentary project is still heavy on laughs, though, like the Mac Miller-featuring (and previously leaked) \u201cShe Knows Too Much,\u201d which translates the close friends\u2019 shared humor into musical form. \u201cWhen that [song] came out of him, my jaw was on the floor,\u201d Thundercat remembers of Miller\u2019s speedy writing and recording of the track. The song\u2019s lyrics, about the realities of dating while famous, struck him. \u201c&#8217;You could talk about the universe and energy but all you really want is a celebrity&#8217; \u2014 is like, <i>What has this man seen? Do you think that was a particularly special time in the history of Los Angeles music?<br \/>\n          <\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n            Thundercat: There\u2019s always something. It\u2019s more exciting to see what comes next. But you wouldn\u2019t know that [that moment with Flying Lotus] was <i>that<\/i>. I didn\u2019t realize until now how niche or how special the way we grew up was.  It was Kamasi\u2019s birthday yesterday and I posted a couple of photos, and it\u2019s at like 15, 14, 13. I was just like, \u201cHoly crap.\u201d We were very fortunate to grow up the way, between Reggie Andrews and having places like Low End Theory, and a few different places that we grew up playing around, jazz festivals. It was just a really special time.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            In hindsight, I definitely can see that [our coming up] was a thing, but in the middle of it, you\u2019re just a crazy drunk musician. \u201cWait, I\u2019m getting paid to do this? Alright, cool.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            <b>What\u2019s your relationship with the internet been like over these past many years? <br \/><\/b><br \/>I like to make it fun for myself. Is the internet enjoyable? No. But it\u2019s like herpes, it isn&#8217;t going anywhere.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-278659\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            <b>Do you have fond memories of the earlier internet, early platforms that you genuinely enjoyed?<br \/><\/b><br \/>Yeah, early Twitter with me and Zack Fox, when nobody had to pay attention too much.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>What\u2019s your biggest complaint about the internet?<br \/><\/b><br \/>Too much information all the time. There\u2019s also just enough information, J.E.I. I try to find that line [with my internet usage] of \u201cThat\u2019s enough.\u201d I try to do that on a daily basis. \u201cOh, that\u2019s crazy, that\u2019s cool. <i>A couple beheadings \u2026 They just uncovered that Doritos are made of plastic. Great. I don\u2019t eat Doritos. Oh, someone fell off&#8230; okay that\u2019s great. That\u2019s enough for me.<\/i>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>When did you realize that internet craziness would be the crux of this project?<br \/><\/b><br \/>All you gotta do is get caught cheating one time. How do you balance that? <br \/><\/b><br \/>I&#8217;ve always tried to hold true to being honest in my music. I don&#8217;t go naming people, but every now and again somebody goes, \u201cThis song\u2019s about me!\u201d Get over yourself. <i> [Laughs] <\/i> No, it\u2019s about pain in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>. It\u2019s my experience.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>How do you avoid making things vague? You could hide \u2014 <\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Nah, it\u2019s about cats jacking off, crying. \u201cShe left me, bro.\u201d [<i>Makes a badum tss sound effect<\/i>]. You gotta laugh at some point.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Were you laughing during the making of this record?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Yeah. One song that\u2019s always been funny to me in that respect is \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3APvI_L6yJI\">She Knows Too Much<\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s a fun moment between me, Mac and Taylor Graves. It\u2019s absolute insanity. You could see Mac\u2019s life straight out all the time, his not so special moments and special moments, breakups and all kinds of stuff.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>How did you choose to put it on this album?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            We knew it was going to be something, we just didn&#8217;t know where. It leaked \u2026 It happens every now and again, but when that song leaked heavily, it was just like, \u201cOh man.\u201d [We were] trying to figure out how to control it. Again, the internet\u2026 too much information.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            [The song just] felt special, even when we would go back to it. We\u2019d only revisit it a couple of times. Mac kind of continuously would move forward with things. Can you just tell me a little bit about the process behind that?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            [The director, L\u00e9a Esmaili ] had an idea already. She was kind of like, \u201cHow far can I go with this?\u201d You know? I was like, \u201cMan, do your worst.\u201d This song is as straightforward exactly what it means to say, so what does that feel like to you? There\u2019s several different animators that worked on it. But there is a part where it that was trying to capture the right sentiment of what it was like between [Mac Miller and I]. Not to make it too gut-wrenching emotionally and keep it lighthearted and silly. Not too heavy-handed on the nudity. There was one moment where I was like, \u201cMake those titties bigger! We gotta compete with Cardi B. You gotta fix those.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>You just mentioned what you and Mac had together. Do you mind sharing a little bit what that relationship meant to you? <\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            He was definitely like a brother to me. He\u2019s family. He was an inspiration, and a beautiful human being all around. There\u2019s nothing negative I would ever have to say about Mac. And at the same time, even if I did, it was probably merited. But he lives on.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>I was thinking about the themes of the <i>Distracted<\/i>. Becoming a bass virtuoso at  a young age meant since you were a kid, you had to lock in and be the opposite of \u201cdistracted,\u201d right?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            I think I&#8217;ve always been distracted [laughs]. I&#8217;m very fortunate for how I grew up with the friends and family that I did grow up with. Uncovering some shit.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>What was it like to lock in with Greg Kurstin on this album? <\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            He\u2019s a legend. We took to each other really quickly. Greg is an astounding musician and an amazing producer and would become a good friend also through the process. He probably thinks I&#8217;m crazy as hell. But I&#8217;m probably not the craziest he\u2019s ever seen. This is sober Steve. A big difference. I would hope there was a notable difference. Sometimes I can understand why I drank though.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Why is that?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            What do you mean why? In the year of our Lord 2026? What do you mean, \u201cWhy did you drink?\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>How do you feel about putting another body of work out in the world?<br \/><\/b><br \/>It\u2019s pretty <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>py. It\u2019s almost like I had to relearn how to be comfortable with myself doing it. The last album was a lot. At the same time, it was kind of one of those things where this album, that last album took a lot out of me, you know? It\u2019s hard to see when you\u2019re hungry and you need to keep moving forward all the time.
