clay ashtray as she talks about her mercurial writing process. \u201cThe \u2018writing every day\u2019 thing is the most insane bullshit,\u201d she says, her eyes trained on her hands, which are intently kneading the small earthen ball in front of her.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Over her last decade making music as Snail Mail, Jordan has developed a number of creative superstitions. For a while, she couldn\u2019t write in an apartment, because she was too self-conscious of annoying her neighbors; or she could only work on songs in six month-long, toiling increments. Before she made 2023\u2019s <i>Valentine<\/i>, she thought she could only write in her parents\u2019 house, as she had as an adolescent musical upstart. When she found herself back home during COVID, she wrote the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZxarOZ0JBcc\">album\u2019s beloved title track<\/a>, seemingly confirming her hunch. \u201cWhich made it worse,\u201d she says.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The creative obsession forced her to land on a new writing technique for her latest record, <i>Ricochet<\/i>. Equal parts diarist and poet, Jordan is uniquely able to express the feeling of ache, be it romantic or existential. Whereas earlier albums vibrated with an expressive, sometimes howling pain, <i>Ricochet<\/i> comes out like a sigh. It expresses the resigned feeling that life, and pain, inevitably drags on.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            She wrote the record largely in her new home in suburban Greensboro, North Carolina, where she moved two years ago from New York City. \u201cI read <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/kim-deal-embarks-on-solo-career-after-decades-in-the-pixies-and-the-breeders#:~:text=Kim%20Deal%2C%20Musician:,down%20payment%20on%20a%20house.\">that Kim Deal interview<\/a> where she&#8217;s like, \u2018If you are in a band and you don&#8217;t put your money into a house eventually, you&#8217;re an idiot,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cI found a place that was cheap, peaceful and not too far from a good airport. I&#8217;m h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y as a clam.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Her main local companions are her neighbors, but longtime girlfriend, New York band Momma\u2019s Etta Friedman, visits often. Her earlier works, like 2016\u2019s <i>Habit<\/i> or 2018\u2019s <i>Lush<\/i>, were emotionally im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te. <i>Ricochet<\/i> is still just as moving but it has a level of remove. Its primary topics are life and death, inspired by a viewing of Charlie Kaufman\u2019s 2008 existential inflected tragicomedy, <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i2q8F0yRmrs\">Synecdoche, New York<\/a><\/i>. The movie and its focus on mortality, she says, flared a new spiral of obsessive thinking around the impermanence of life.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Jordan, who grew up Catholic, says that a lot of her younger pain and obsession was wrapped in the need to constantly confess. Having been away from the church for a long time now has provided some relief, but it also meant that certain daunting questions \u2014 like what happens when one dies \u2014 remain anxiously unanswered.  \u201cNow it&#8217;s like, <i>I don&#8217;t know<\/i>,\u201d she says of the afterlife.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-278681\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Soon, normal activities, like spending time with friends, became prohibitively difficult. She imagined friends dying as she spent time with them. Fear of death even crept in while she was playing shows, as she repeatedly imagined having to end touring due to old age.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Jordan struggled to find a way to express these grim feelings in a way that wasn\u2019t forebodingly dark. \u201cI think nihilism is really lame and useless,\u201d she says. Per her intent, the album doesn\u2019t feel heavy, but rather searching. Co-produced by her and Aaron Kobayshi-Ritch, also a member (and producer) of Momma, the record sounds clean and classy, even as she\u2019s posing the eternal questions plainly, like on album single \u201cMy Maker,\u201d where she sings, \u201cAnother year gone by \/What if nothing matters? \/ Waitin&#8217; &#8217;round to die\/ To see what happens after.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The album\u2019s sound brings to mind the big studio rock of the \u201890s, like the Goo Goo Dolls or even The Cranberries, with strings and lush textures, driving drums, and an almost pop momentum. For longtime fans, she almost sounds like a different singer, with a new falsetto and a refurbished croon replacing what was once an expressive yelp. It\u2019s the result of her undergoing surgery in 2021 to remove her vocal polyps. She got the diagnosis right before she was set to tour <i>Valentine<\/i>; the procedure put her out of commission for three months and she had to push everything back. \u201cFor an entire month, I literally couldn&#8217;t emit sound,\u201d she says. She had to learn how to talk and sing again, and discovered through her vocal therapist that she\u2019d had vocal polyps since puberty (they were even audible in her early music).\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            She\u2019s giddy about the new voice, though: \u201cI love having a crazy high range. It&#8217;s awesome. It feels random as fuck.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-278685\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            When we speak, Jordan hasn\u2019t shared the record with many people yet, and she\u2019s uncertain how this album&#8217;s sound \u2014 more restrained, perhaps colder, but still deeply expressive \u2014 will resonate with the indie crowd.
