Pinterest\u2019s CEO, Bill Ready, has called for governments to ban social media<\/a> for users under 16 in a new Time op-ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s now one of the few top CEOs to call for such a restriction, as nations worldwide begin to implement or consider ways to limit children\u2019s online time, and exactly how to verify ages.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ready wrote that children today were \u201cliving through the largest social experiment in history,\u201d as they have been given \u201cunfiltered access to social media platforms.\u201d Research shows the damage this unfiltered access has done, with today\u2019s youth seeing increased rates of depression, anxiety, and lower concentration skills.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said social media platforms gave \u201cinsufficient forethought about the consequences\u201d of what they could do to children, and praised Australia\u2019s social media ban for children, saying that \u201cif tech companies fail to prioritize youth safety, other governments should follow Australia\u2019s lead.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed out the restrictions and guidelines industries like tobacco and alcohol have, writing that \u201csuch policies can improve, and sometimes save lives.\u201d He also said Pinterest has been successful with Gen Z, even after banning access to the site\u2019s social features to users under age 16.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we make excuses for not acting in the public\u2019s best interest, tech CEOs sound like 20th-century tobacco executives who had to be shamed and sued into submission,\u201d he wrote. <\/p>\n

Aside from Australia, Malaysia<\/a>, Spain,<\/a> and Indonesia<\/a> have all announced social media bans. The movement is sparking debate within the tech industry, but lawmakers have shown no sign of bowing to pressure. Legislators in France also just approved a ban<\/a> for users under 15, while Germany\u2019s ruling party said it supported a form of social media ban,<\/a> too. States throughout the U.S. are also looking at ways to restrict minors\u2019 access to social media.<\/p>\n
