For these platforms, it is confirmed infrastructure, not speculation.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Google AI Overviews:<\/strong> In April 2025, the Google Search team said that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-confirms-structured-data-still-essential-in-ai-search-era\/544141\/\">structured data gives an advantage<\/a> in search results.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Microsoft Bing Copilot:<\/strong> Fabrice Canel, principal product manager at Microsoft Bing, confirmed in March 2025 that schema markup helps Microsoft\u2019s LLMs understand content for Copilot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-about-chatgpt-perplexity-and-other-ai-search-platforms-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_about_ChatGPT_Perplexity_and_other_AI_search_platforms\"><\/span>What about ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI search platforms?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We don\u2019t know how these platforms use schema yet. They haven\u2019t publicly confirmed whether they preserve schema during web crawling or use it for extraction. The technical capability exists for LLMs to process structured data, but that doesn\u2019t mean their search systems do.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper: When and how to use knowledge graphs and entities for SEO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"research-on-schema-and-ai\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Research_on_schema_and_AI\"><\/span>Research on schema and AI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Here are a few studies that show how schema can benefit AI search.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-citation-rates\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Citation_rates\"><\/span>Citation rates<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A December 2024 study from Search\/Atlas found <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/searchatlas.com\/blog\/limits-of-schema-markup-for-ai-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no correlation between schema markup coverage and citation rates<\/a>. Sites with comprehensive schema didn\u2019t consistently outperform sites with minimal or no schema markup.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean schema is useless, it means schema alone doesn\u2019t drive citations. LLM systems appear to prioritize relevance, topical authority, and semantic clarity over whether content has structured markup.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-extraction-accuracy\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Extraction_accuracy\"><\/span>Extraction accuracy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A February 2024 Nature Communications study found that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-45563-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LLMs extract information more accurately when given structured prompts with defined fields<\/a> versus unstructured \u201cextract what matters\u201d instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Put differently, LLMs perform best when you give them a structured form to fill out, not a blank canvas. When models are asked to extract into predefined fields, they make fewer errors than when told to simply \u201cpull out what matters.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schema markup on a page is the web equivalent of that form: a set of explicit entity, brand, product, price, author, and topic fields that a system can map to, rather than inferring everything from unstructured prose.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-the-research-tells-us\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_the_research_tells_us\"><\/span>What the research tells us<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This tells us that LLMs have the technical capability to process structured data more accurately than unstructured text.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, this doesn\u2019t tell us whether AI search systems preserve schema markup during web crawling, whether they use it to guide extraction from web pages, or whether this results in better visibility.<\/p>\n<p>The leap from \u201cLLMs can process structured data\u201d to \u201cweb schema markup improves AI search visibility\u201d requires assumptions we can\u2019t verify for most platforms.<\/p>\n<p>For Microsoft Bing and Google AI Overviews, schema likely improves extraction accuracy, since they\u2019ve confirmed they use it. For AI search, the more useful pattern is to connect nodes into a coherent graph using <code>@id<\/code>.
