\n Twitter is examining why its artificial intelligence sometimes cuts black people\u2019s faces out of photos.<\/p>\n

The social-media giant uses technology<\/a> called a neural network<\/a> to create the cropped previews of photos that users see as they scroll through their feeds. But users discovered that the system often hones in on white faces when they\u2019re pictured in the same image as black faces.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tested for bias before shipping the model and didn\u2019t find evidence of racial or gender bias in our testing, but it\u2019s clear that we\u2019ve got more analysis to do,\u201d Twitter spokeswoman Liz Kelley tweeted<\/a> Sunday after users pointed out the issue, which was reported earlier by The Verge<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ll open source our work so others can review and replicate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Programmer Tony Arcieri demonstrated the problem<\/a> with an image that pictured both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and former President Barack Obama. The photo preview only showed McConnell\u2019s face \u2014 even when Arcieri switched the position of their headshots and the color of their ties.<\/p>\n

The same thing happ<\/a>ened with another image<\/a> featuring two cartoon characters from \u201cThe Simpsons\u201d: Lenny, who is white, and Carl, who is black. Twitter cropped out Carl and only showed Lenny in the preview.<\/p>\n

A third example with two men in suits showed the white man in the preview and cut out the black man. But a Twitter honcho pointed out<\/a> that other factors, such as the color of the background, may have played a role.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this example it\u2019s the brighter background being used to make the cropping decision,\u201d Dantley Davis, Twitter\u2019s chief design officer, said in a tweet<\/a>. \u201cIf we stopped cropping photos this would go away, which is on the team\u2019s mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twitter shares were down 1 percent at $39.75 as of 12:58 p.m. Monday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
