Whether it\u2019s trademark restrictions, brand guidelines, or industry stigma, you might be asked to capture demand without using the exact terms people search.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to navigate that challenge, align with search behavior, and still build visibility.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-the-keyword-you-need-is-offlimits\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_the_keyword_you_need_is_off-limits\"><\/span>When the keyword you need is off-limits<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s a common scenario in SEO: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWe want to rank for <em>(insert super competitive search term)<\/em>,\u201d and, in the next breath, \u201cDon\u2019t use <em>(that exact same phrase)<\/em> on the page.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My very first SEO job, over 10 years ago, set the goal of ranking in the top 3 for the term \u201ccustom koozies.\u201d I\u2019ve been in heated debates over the proper term for these drink coolers. <\/p>\n<p>In my household, they were called \u201ccoolie cups.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> term is \u201ccan coolers,\u201d but search volume tells us the vast majority of the U.S. would call these products \u201ckoozies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Search volume data settled the debate, but Koozie\u00ae was a registered trademark. We worked our way to the top of the search results without relying on the restricted term as the primary on-page language.<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, I landed at a marketing agency that specializes in the senior living industry. There were many new terms to familiarize myself with: assisted living, independent living, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement community (CCRC), among others.<\/p>\n<p>Keyword research showed that users were searching \u201cnursing home,\u201d but it turned out that many of the organizations had begun to steer away from the term \u201cnursing home\u201d because of its negative connotations.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, they\u2019re a nursing home, and that\u2019s what real people call them. Pull the data and confirm direction<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In some cases, you can get an \u201caha\u201d moment just by showing the data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I tell clients that \u201cskilled nursing near me\u201d has 4,400 monthly search volume, but \u201cnursing home near me\u201d gets searched 27,100 times per month, it sometimes softens their stance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pulling local search volume or localized search terms can be beneficial, too. Do the research and follow the data.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to get clear on exactly how off-limits a term is. Is it acceptable to use it in non-focal page copy with a different primary term, or is it OK to use it alongside a preferred term?<\/p>\n<p>Confirm what\u2019s allowed versus unacceptable use.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-use-all-the-terms-around-it\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Use_all_the_terms_around_it\"><\/span>2. Use all the terms around it<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Create a list of terms related to your primary term, and be sure to hit on those, too. For Koozies, this would be \u201cbeer,\u201d \u201cdrink,\u201d \u201ckeeping your drink cold,\u201d and common uses such as \u201cbachelorette party\u201d and \u201cwedding.\u201d These help build context for search engines.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-use-similar-terms-and-break-down-phrases\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Use_similar_terms_and_break_down_phrases\"><\/span>3. Use similar terms and break down phrases<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Consider whether there are similar terms to the primary term, and be sure to use those, too. For Koozies, we could use \u201ccozies\u201d and \u201ccoolies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If your primary term is more than one word, use each individual word frequently. For nursing homes, we can discuss \u201cnursing\u201d care and use \u201chome\u201d throughout the page.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-use-the-term-indirectly\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Use_the_term_indirectly\"><\/span>4. Incorporate the product that can\u2019t be named onto the page<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This was key for the Koozies situation. The non-Koozie\u00ae brand products couldn\u2019t be called Koozies, but when we added a Koozie brand product alongside the best-selling non-Koozie brand products, suddenly we could call this category \u201cCan Coolers &amp; Koozies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The average person wouldn\u2019t consider these separate products, but, officially, we did.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-get-creative-with-anchor-text\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Get_creative_with_anchor_text\"><\/span>6. Get creative with anchor text<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The text that links to your page can significantly influence how search engines understand it.<\/p>\n<p>Consider where you can control the anchor text, and use your primary term in both off-site and internal linking.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-use-the-term-in-non-visible-elements\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Use_the_term_in_non-visible_elements\"><\/span>7. Use the term in non-visible elements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Alt text is perfect for keyword placement for those terms that the industry frowns upon but that are publicly accepted. This avoids the text <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing on the page while still describing the product. I\u2019d use caution with trademark terms when using this tactic to avoid misleading or violating trademark guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t sleep on title tags. This might be the most important tactic: find a way to get your primary term in the title tag.<\/p>\n<p>For those frowned-upon terms, this can be simple if you have approval to use the term in non-focal areas. Although the title tag is the first thing someone may see in the search results, it\u2019s not necessarily visible on the page, making it a strong opportunity to balance the language of the searcher with your brand voice.<\/p>\n<p>For trademarked products, this works well with tactic five. If possible, including the trademarked products on the named page allows you to put both the trademarked term and the generic term in the title tag.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-add-definitions\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Add_definitions\"><\/span>8.
