The city\u2019s tiniest students kicked off their formal educations amid an unprecedented pandemic Monday \u2014 but bravely embraced the challenge with good cheer and hope for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love school!\u201d announced 4-year-old Cassius Sanchez-Snead after his first slate of pre-K classes at PS 20 in Clinton Hill.<\/p>\n

While Mayor de Blasio delayed the start of the academic year for older kids until next week, the bell rang Monday for roughly 90,000 early education enrollees in 3-k and Pre-k programs along with some special education students.<\/p>\n

Wearing masks and holding still for temperature checks at newly opened buildings across the city, many of the energized tots entered classrooms for the first time.<\/p>\n

Gemma Taylor, 3, said she managed to establish a circle of pals at PS 20 in just a matter of hours during Monday\u2019s abbreviated schedule.<\/p>\n

Asked about her favorite part of the morning, the youngster didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played with my friends,\u201d she said with a grin.<\/p>\n

Aliana, 4, said she wasn\u2019t quite ready to return home after the final bell rang.<\/p>\n

She shook her head in the affirmative when asked if she was sad to head back to the house after the day\u2019s thrills.<\/p>\n

City parents were also relieved to finally have a few hours of liberation Monday after months of COVID-19 family immersion.<\/p>\n

Cassius\u2019s mom, Nicole Sanchez, said she saw immedia<\/a>te benefits after getting back home from dropping him off.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was drinking my coffee with nobody asking me to watch Paw Patrol,\u201d she said. \u201cI was like \u2018this is great!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucia\u2019s dad, Gabriele Caroti, said she was able to put her suddenly available free time to good use.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the last six months I\u2019ve been her primary caregiver,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been good to be back (at school). I got a lot of work done.\u201d<\/p>\n

At PS 205 in Elmhurst, Queens, Bruce Pinner, 42, said his little girl, Zoe, showed maturity beyond her years Monday.<\/p>\n

The 4-year-old managed to handle her mask responsibilities and made her dad proud.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s getting more and more used to it,\u201d he said after picking her up. \u201cShe understands that it\u2019s for safety so she doesn\u2019t get sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pinner said he hoped the remainder of the year would proceed as smoothly as the first day.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully it just keeps up for the rest of the year and everything goes fine,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
