Universal\u2019s\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein<\/em><\/strong> reboot isn\u2019t quite dead yet. At one point, the film was supposed to be part of Universal\u2019s Dark Universe \u2013 but then that entire idea was chased away by torch-wielding villagers. Now, Universal is taking a different, and so far better, app<\/a>roach to reviving their classic monsters. They already released\u00a0The Invisible Man<\/em> with Blumhouse, and have several other monster-related titles in the works. And according to screenwriter David Koepp<\/strong>,\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein<\/em> is one of them.<\/p>\n

Back when the Dark Universe was still a thing,\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein<\/em> was supposed to follow-up Tom Cruise\u2019s\u00a0The Mummy<\/em>. Bill Condon was set to direct, Javier Bardem was set to star, and David Koepp was tackling the script. Then the Dark Universe came crashing down, and everything went out the window. Since then, Universal has found success working with Blumhouse on\u00a0The Invisible Man<\/em>, and reboots of\u00a0The Wolf Man<\/em>,\u00a0Dracula<\/em>, and more, are all in the works now. And it looks like they haven\u2019t pulled the plug on\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein<\/em> just yet.<\/p>\n

While it doesn\u2019t seem like Bill Condon and Javier Bardem are still involved, David Koepp is still working on the script. Speaking with Collider, Koepp said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was one thing I did during quarantine \u2013 I brought back\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein<\/em>\u00a0into a place where I kind of always wanted it to be. Universal was very gracious to let me try again. Because they had geared up and shut down famously in the Dark Universe fiasco. Well, not fiasco, but\u00a0disappointment<\/em>. So I have a version now and they have a version that we all really like. I think they\u2019re talking to directors now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Koepp added: \u201cIt\u2019s not the great big, $150 million extravaganza with giant movie stars. It\u2019s not as scaled-down as\u00a0Invisible Man<\/em>\u00a0but much more reasonable, doable thing, with, I think, a really cool idea and it\u2019s all present day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The original\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein<\/em> was released in 1935, and is often hailed as one of the best horror movies<\/a> ever made. After the success of\u00a0Frankenstein<\/em>, director James Whale was able to take his sequel into a stranger, funnier, campier direction, resulting in one of the most memorable entries in the original Universal Monsters line-up.<\/p>\n

I like much of Koepp\u2019s work \u2013 his\u00a0Stir of Echoes<\/em> is a severely underrated ghost movie \u2013 so I\u2019m curious to see what he has in store for\u00a0Bride<\/em>. At one point, Angelina Jolie was mentioned as possibly starring in this film as the Bride herself. We\u2019ll have to wait and see if that still happens now.<\/p>\n
