For 20 years, SEO teams optimized for SERP position. Higher rankings meant more visibility, more clicks, and more traffic. This is a shift from how users behave in traditional search. And 56% of users built their own shortlist from multiple sources. Category leaders like Samsung in consumer electronics didn\u2019t just appear more often. They got more detailed descriptions when they did appear.<\/p>\n<p>Challenger brands like Logitech in gaming accessories showed up, too, but typically with shorter mentions focused on a single differentiator.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.growth-memo.com\/p\/the-science-of-how-ai-picks-its-sources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top 4.8% of URLs cited 10+ times by ChatGPT<\/a> share a common trait. They\u2019re comprehensive pages that answer \u201cwhat is it,\u201d \u201cwho uses it,\u201d \u201chow to choose,\u201d and \u201cpricing\u201d in a single URL.<\/p>\n<p>Word count seems to matter, too. Pages above 20,000 characters average 10.18 citations each. Pages under 500 characters average just 2.39.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lesson:<\/strong> If AI systems have thin data about your brand, you get thin mentions.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-authority-signals\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Authority_signals\"><\/span>3. Authority signals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>AI systems don\u2019t just cite sources. They characterize them by tone, which reveals how much confidence the AI has in your authority.<\/p>\n<p>HubSpot\u2019s AEO Grader, launched in early 2026, classifies brands into competitive roles: leader, challenger, or niche player. They\u2019re positioning labels that determine how persuasively AI presents you.<\/p>\n<p>Semrush\u2019s awards data showed that category leaders have less than 20% monthly volatility in AI share of voice. Once AI systems establish you as a leader, that perception tends to stick.<\/p>\n<p>The language reflects this correlation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leaders get described with confident phrasing, such as \u201cthe industry standard\u201d and \u201cwidely recognized.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Challengers get \u201cgrowing alternative\u201d and \u201cgaining traction.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most brand mentions in AI answers are neutral or positive. But neutral isn\u2019t the same as enthusiastic.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between \u201calso offers project management features\u201d and \u201cconsidered one of the top three project management platforms\u201d is authority signaling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lesson:<\/strong> AI doesn\u2019t just say your name.
