Scott Stouffer, co-founder and CTO at Market Brew.<\/p>\n<p>Brands still publish content, optimize pages, build authority, and follow SEO best practices. But that may not be enough anymore. <\/p>\n<p>Search has moved away from a simple battle over keywords, links, and page-level signals. It\u2019s now shaped by meaning, intent, embeddings, and retrieval, Stouffer said during his SEO Week presentation.<\/p>\n<p>In legacy SEO, a page could rank lower and still exist in the search results. In AI-driven systems, the first question isn\u2019t whether you rank. It\u2019s whether you\u2019re ever retrieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re not retrieved, you do not exist to AI,\u201d Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>Your brand already exists inside AI systems as a mathematical object. You may call yourself one thing. Your homepage may say another. Your brand guidelines may promise a clear position. But AI systems build their own view of your brand from the content you have published.<\/p>\n<p>That computed version of your brand may be different from the one you intended to build.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"retrieval-now-matters-before-ranking\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Retrieval_now_matters_before_ranking\"><\/span>Retrieval now matters before ranking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>AI visibility begins before ranking, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>In traditional SEO, marketers focus on positions \u2014 first, third, or tenth. But AI systems <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly a filter earlier. Before anything is ranked, the system determines which content is eligible for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>That is retrieval.<\/p>\n<p>When a user asks a question, the system pulls a limited set of passages or chunks that best match the query. Those passages define the answer space.<\/p>\n<p>If your content isn\u2019t included, you get no impressions, no clicks, and no visibility at all, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>The real shift is moving from exclusion to inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t lose. You just never entered the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>,\u201d Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ai-does-not-see-pages-the-way-seos-do\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AI_does_not_see_pages_the_way_SEOs_do\"><\/span>AI does not see pages the way SEOs do<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>AI systems don\u2019t treat a webpage as one clean unit, Stouffer said. They don\u2019t evaluate pages as whole objects or prioritize layout, structure, or formatting.<\/p>\n<p>Content is broken apart. A page becomes chunks: passages, sections, and individual ideas. <\/p>\n<p>Each chunk is evaluated independently. A paragraph deep in a guide can compete on its own. A single sentence can be selected if it aligns closely with the query.<\/p>\n<p>This shifts competition from page versus page to passage versus passage.<\/p>\n<p>Most of a page may never be considered. Only the most aligned chunks are evaluated.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meaning-becomes-math\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Meaning_becomes_math\"><\/span>Meaning becomes math<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Each chunk is converted into a vector, Stouffer explained.<\/p>\n<p>This vector represents meaning as a position in a high-dimensional space. It captures context and intent rather than exact wording.<\/p>\n<p>Two pieces of content can use different words but sit close together if they express the same idea. Others can share keywords, but sit far apart if they represent different meanings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s comparing meaning, not wording, measuring distance, not keyword overlap,\u201d Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>Relevance is determined by proximity. The closer a chunk is to a query in this space, the more likely it is to be retrieved.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"your-content-forms-clusters\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your_content_forms_clusters\"><\/span>Your content forms clusters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As chunks are mapped into this space, they group together.<\/p>\n<p>Content with similar meaning forms clusters, even across different pages. These clusters reflect how AI systems understand topics.<\/p>\n<p>This understanding comes from how content naturally groups by meaning, not by site structure or labels, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>If content is consistent, clusters become dense and clear. If content is scattered, clusters become fragmented.<\/p>\n<p>What matters is not what a brand intends to say, but what its content actually communicates.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-centroid-is-your-brand-to-ai\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_centroid_is_your_brand_to_AI\"><\/span>The centroid is your brand to AI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Within these clusters, there is a center point \u2014 the centroid, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>The centroid represents the average position of all related content. It reflects the site\u2019s core meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Every page and paragraph influences that position. Consistent content creates a clear, stable centroid. Inconsistent content dilutes it.<\/p>\n<p>That centroid is how AI understands your brand.<\/p>\n<p>Not your homepage. Not your messaging. Not your brand guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Your centroid is the combined signal of everything you have published, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour centroid doesn\u2019t care about intent. It reflects the math of everything you\u2019ve ever published,\u201d Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alignment-beats-isolated-optimization\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alignment_beats_isolated_optimization\"><\/span>Alignment beats isolated optimization<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This changes how content should be evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>The key question isn\u2019t whether a page is optimized in isolation. It\u2019s whether it aligns with the rest of the site.<\/p>\n<p>Each page either strengthens the centroid or pulls it in a different direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOptimization without alignment creates drift, and drift is what breaks consistency,\u201d Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>As drift increases, the site becomes harder for AI systems to interpret and retrieve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t write pages, you project meaning,\u201d Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"retrieval-starts-with-proximity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Retrieval_starts_with_proximity\"><\/span>Retrieval starts with proximity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When a query is entered, the system converts it into a vector, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>It then searches for the closest matches in meaning space.<\/p>\n<p>This includes both individual chunks and the centroids that represent broader content clusters.<\/p>\n<p>If your content is close enough, it enters the candidate set. If it is too far away, it is excluded.<\/p>\n<p>Only after this stage do traditional ranking signals apply.<\/p>\n<p>Content quality, links, and structure matter \u2014 but only if the content is first retrieved.<\/p>\n<p>If not, those signals are never evaluated, he said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"most-brands-look-too-similar-to-ai\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Most_brands_look_too_similar_to_AI\"><\/span>Most brands look too similar to AI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many brands follow similar strategies, use the same sources, and produce similar content.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, their centroids converge in the same region, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>He described this as cluster collision.<\/p>\n<p>When multiple brands occupy the same space, AI systems don\u2019t select all of them. They choose a few and ignore the rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not failing best practices. They\u2019re colliding with everyone else using them,\u201d Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"distinct-meaning-is-the-new-advantage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Distinct_meaning_is_the_new_advantage\"><\/span>Distinct meaning is the new advantage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Producing more content or improving existing content isn\u2019t enough. If content remains similar in meaning, it remains in the same space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need a distinct centroid,\u201d Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>A clear, separate position in meaning space reduces competition and increases the likelihood of retrieval.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"seo-becomes-a-control-loop\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SEO_becomes_a_control_loop\"><\/span>SEO becomes a control loop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is not a one-time adjustment.<\/p>\n<p>Every piece of content shifts the centroid.<\/p>\n<p>That requires an ongoing process of measurement and adjustment, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>Teams need to monitor alignment continuously and correct drift as it occurs.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, this creates a more stable system where new content reinforces the existing structure.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-visibility-problem-is-really-an-observability-problem\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_visibility_problem_is_really_an_observability_problem\"><\/span>The visibility problem is really an observability problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most teams can\u2019t see how their content exists in this system.<\/p>\n<p>They can\u2019t see clusters, centroids, or distances \u2014 or why content is excluded.<\/p>\n<p>So they rely on trial and error, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>They publish, optimize, and wait for results. When nothing changes, they try something else.<\/p>\n<p>Without visibility into the system, they react to outcomes rather than understanding causes.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-ai-seeing-the-brand-you-think-youve-built\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_AI_seeing_the_brand_you_think_youve_built\"><\/span>Is AI seeing the brand you <em>think<\/em> you\u2019ve built?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your brand already exists as a mathematical object inside AI systems, Stouffer said.<\/p>\n<p>You do not get to choose that.<\/p>\n<p>You only choose whether to measure and control it or let it drift.<\/p>\n<p>AI does not see your brand the way you describe it.
