\n\tThe Devil Wears Prada<\/em> 2, from 20th Century and Disney, opened to $32.5 million on Friday at the North American box office, where it remains on course to debut in the $75 million-$80 million range in North America nearly two decades after the first film turned into a sleeper box office hit on its way to earning $326.5 million globally and becoming a cultural touchstone. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe sequel is another reminder of the buying power of women and teenage girls. Friday\u2019s haul included $10 million in Thursday previews, one of the best showings ever for a female-fueled pic, and not far behind current box office hits\u00a0Michael\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Project Hail Mary<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Devil Wears Prada\u00a02<\/em>\u00a0is the first female-driven movie in modern history to kick off the summer box office, a duty that has almost always gone to a Marvel superhero pic or a\u00a0Fast & Furious<\/em>\u00a0title. It\u2019s feasting on strong reviews and audience exit polls, including receiving an A- CinemaScore. <\/p>\n

\n\tPrada 2<\/em>\u00a0is attracting moviegoers across all age groups who are eager to see original cast members\u00a0Meryl Streep, who plays a legendary, searing fashion magazine editor,\u00a0Anne Hathaway,\u00a0Stanley Tucci\u00a0and\u00a0Emily Blunt\u00a0reunite. Another boon for the project:\u00a0David Frankel\u00a0returned to direct alongside writer Aline Brosh McKenna.<\/p>\n

\n\tTo put things in perspective, the sequel\u2019s opening day tops the entire opening weekend of the first film ($27.5 million), not adjusted for inflation. <\/p>\n

\n\tPrada 2<\/em> is even bigger overseas, where its total through Friday was $82.1 million for an early cume north of $114 million after scoring the top opening day of any film this year, including in Brazil and Italy.<\/p>\n

\n\tLionsgate\u2019s Michael Jackson biopic Michael<\/em> also continues to make history, crossing the $300 million mark to become the top-grossing music biopic of all time after passing Walk the Line<\/em> and Elvis<\/em>. <\/p>\n
