\n A Brooklyn state lawmaker and the city\u2019s largest police union waged a war of words on Twitter<\/a> over Gotham\u2019s safety \u2014 with the cops accusing the pol of making light of shootings and the lawmaker firing back that police are fear-mongering.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew York is so dead and so dangerous!\u201d Assemblyman Robert Carroll sarcastically tweeted Saturday night<\/a> with a picture of smiling patrons dining al fresco in Lower Manhattan.<\/p>\n

Carroll told The Post he was mocking critics who insist that the city is spiraling out control amid a surge in shootings.<\/p>\n

The Police Benevolent Association took umbrage, retorting on Monday<\/a>, \u201cYes, it is more dangerous. Your neighborhood has seen a 267% INCREASE in shooting victims. THIRTY-FIVE more NYers shot this past week. Do you think that\u2019s funny, Bobby?\u201d<\/p>\n

The assemblyman\u2019s district includes portions of the 66th, 70th, 72nd and 78th Precincts, but the 237 percent referenced only Flatbush\u2019s 70th Precinct \u2014 the most violent of the four \u2014 of which Carroll\u2019s district covers but a sliver. The shooting victim tally was a citywide figure, union reps said.<\/p>\n

In fact, there have been zero shootings in Carroll\u2019s district this year, NYPD data shows \u2014 prompting the lawmaker to call foul on the union.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fed up. It\u2019s bulls\u2013t,\u201d Carroll, 33, fumed to The Post. \u201cIt is safe to dine outside. It is safe to go out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t need the PBA looking at elected officials\u2019 tweets and trolling,\u201d he said. \u201cThe PBA is trying to scare people. They\u2019re 100-percent fear mongering.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city has seen a dramatic rise in shootings \u2014 with nearly twice as many people killed by gun violence this year compared to the same span in 2019.<\/p>\n

Carroll said he was enjoying dinner with his wife when he took the photos in his tweet.<\/p>\n

He also slammed the 160 business leaders who sent a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio last week airing concerns of declining quality of life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 160 CEOs were scaring New Yorkers. You think they\u2019d be made of harder stuff. They\u2019re the Chicken Littles saying \u2018The sky is falling,\u2019 \u201d Carroll said. \u201cTalk about out of touch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carroll said that overall crime has gone down in his Assembly district \u2014 but acknowledged crime is up by 17 percent in the 70th Precinct.<\/p>\n

Notably, shootings in Park Slope\u2019s 78th Precinct rose from zero last year to five this year, he said, while adding that was still a low number.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
