\n At least 25 pilot whales may have died after getting stranded on a sandbar near Tasmania\u2019s west coast.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, some 200 or more await rescue in what marine researchers are calling one of the worst beaching events in the region\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Local government officials and marine conservationists met Monday to address the crisis, situated in three zones off Macquarie Heads, near the city of Strahan, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are three different sites involved \u2026 In total, there are about 270 pilot whales that have been stranded,\u201d said Nic Deka, a spokesperson for Tasmania\u2019s Parks and Wildlife Service. Between 25 and 30 whales are believed dead, according to reports from surveyors flying above the desperate waters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are in water. It\u2019s very difficult to see how many might be deceased or what condition they\u2019re in,\u201d Deka told the Guardian<\/a>. Though not unusual, Deka said it was Tasmania\u2019s first beaching event in at least a decade.<\/p>\n

Pilot whales pass the island annually on their way to Antarctica, where they spend the season before migrating north again, according to marine conservationists with the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment. Beachings can occur for several reasons, including misdirection, shallow water, rocky seas or a perceived threat that pushes the whales off course.<\/p>\n

Officials said they hope to launch a rescue mission Tuesday morning, details of which were not explained. Meanwhile, local authorities are asking residents to steer clear of the boat ramp until further notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we start making an effort tomorrow, it will be with an outward-going tide, so that will be in our favor, but obviously tides go up and down so we\u2019ll be aiming to make the most of the situation,\u201d Deka said.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Monday, Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said he had \u201cmade it very clear to those managing the effort that if additional resources are required, we will not hesitate to organize the support needed,\u201d according to ABC.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt times like these, Tasmanians work together to respond quickly and compassionately, and my thoughts are with those assisting with the efforts,\u201d Gutwein added.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
